SABC asks for licence renewals

my question is does any of this money get used for anything but filling someones back pocket? Since i doubt E-TV even gets a cent.

How many businesses use SABC? its usually only sport!!! Or maybe E-TV that i've seen.

The sooner "TVs" are sold without tuners in them, effectively making them nothing more than monitors, the better it would be for people and business.

The SABC is challenging South African businesses to show their commitment to good corporate governance by renewing their Business TV Licences before the end of September 2008.
And I challenge the SABC to broadcast something worthwhile every now an again.

Is the "monitor" classification a loophole, or does the decoder-monitor combination become a "TV" (as defined), and so subject to the licence? Fat chance of me paying for a licence if I can buy a monitor without one and a decoder without one. I also never use the tuner.

I don't like being threatened with "governance implications" for non-compliance. Furthermore I do not have a single TV set in my business premises so they can sod off!

A TV license is payable for every device capable of receiving a SABC signal. So if you have a TV Tuner in your PC - you need a TV License. If you have a DStv Decoder - you need a TV License. If you a TV with built in tuner - you need a TV License.

What it boils down to is if you have any hardware that enables you to view SABC - then you must pay a TV License.

Step 1 in the right direction would be if Monochoice can remove SABC from the bouquet. Then if you connect you DStv to a monitor you do not need a TV license.

Step 2 would be if we get more and more TV sized monitors in SA.

F__K the SABC. I pay my tv license when I need to buy a TV. Other than that, they can go n jump. I refuse to fill someone's back pocket and also refuse to finance the locally produced cr4p that gets broadcast. I NEVER watch any of the SABC channels!

Unfortunately this is not true. The minute that happens, the Govt will amend the legislation to suit its interests. And all of a sudden, you will need a tv license to buy a monitor for your PC even if you don't intend using it with a TV card. Lets hope they dont do sh^t like make cellphone service providers check your tv license when you buy a cellphone with a radio in it!

Does this mean that sportsbars with 20+ plasma TV's all showing supersport need to buy 20xR225 TV licences?!?! If that is the case then SABC needs to send me some of that fantastic stuff they are smoking.

I think that's what they mean by business licenses... the prolly pay an flat rate for all those TV's!! Whatever the arrangement, the businesses pay TOO much!

PAY YOUR LICENSE. IT'S THE RIGHT THING TO DO. Don't watch TV but have it hooked up to a video machine where you pay for rentals? NO BOTHER - PAY - IT'S THE RIGHT THING TO DO. Have your TV hooked up to a HTPC? NO BOTHER - PAY - IT'S THE RIGHT THING TO DO. While you're at it, pay your rates, licenses and taxes on your energy, water, land, petrol, food, your earnings, every purchase you make (except those that are illicit). IT'S THE RIGHT THING TO DO. Bollocks.

no you pay 1 licence and you can have as many TV's as you wish as long as they're used on your premises!

As far as I know this only applies to residential customers. Businesses need to pay for each separate TV set.
