SABC in the red

THE SABC will today attempt to fend off a liquidation application in the Johannesburg High Court while at the same time convincing journalists that it has a financial turnaround strategy.

WHahahahaha!!! Sorry but i doubt some of those figures. and how do you manage to get so in the red? or am i just oblivious?

Hint : Decrease salary packages (and bonuses) of damagement, show better content on television...

Nah... interesting times for sure.

Better content costs more - not necessarily going to work. Bonuses, yup that one can work.

But in reallity, i reckon all we going to see is an increase in tv licence fees. Yup, the public is going to have to pay. Sad but true.

A mandatory TV Licence fee for everyone who wants to have a TV and still they're financially stuffed? That's like SARS going bankrupt!

How on earth do you fsck that up?

Although the SABC reported profit of R111,3m for the year to March last year, this was because a R420m pension fund surplus was included in the results. Last year’s results show programming purchased but not broadcast had cost the SABC R76m, while wasteful expenditure of R40m was also reported, mainly due to litigation.

Whoa, I mean WTF? They actually buy programming and don't broadcast it. I say the SABC is way to massive, they might have to sell one or two of its commercial broadcasters along with possibly SABC3...Lord knows how they'll finance their DTT ventures.

A lot of people been feeling the pinch of this... friend who works for a media company has been let go along with a whole bunch of others because the SABC hasn't paid the company in a year.

More people should poke at the SABC till it actually does what it says it will.

I wonder how how much of that they bought was local content, more in the sense of a back hand deal(s)... ? We all know that local content costs way more than international. How about a bribe or two?

there should be more
how about water affairs or forestry I think health care is also ( I'm sure Manto helped herself)

Possibly yes but it calls into the question the SABC board who should be there to provide oversight to management. I'm not too clued up on how it acquires its programming but the fact that they spend R76 million on programming which was never shown on television is beyond wasteful- its criminal. Who knows how many people have been living large off the SABC and its viewers who are definitely getting any value for money.

So if 2% of funding comes from TV Licence fees, then why the hell is there always such a massive advertising campaign to "pay your tv licence"? If all of us stopped paying, only 2% is lost off their budget! They can show 2% more adverts which is 72 seconds per hour (and then no more tv licence).

All I can say is "Where is the damn accountability" If for the years since inception it has run at a profit and now for the last few years at a loss bring the responsible CEO & Financial Management crew (ANC cronies) into public light - for a public whip lashing!!! (bring back Corporal Punishment I say - even only just for government). Stone throwing, next best! I only hope the next government remembers these imbeciles and brings them all to task - not forgetting the thieving Parliament "free flight syndicate" who got away scott free!!!!! I personally would guarantee a 1000 votes to opposition if they did just that!
