Is it currently possible to get SABC live streaming over the internet, such as via an XBMC plug-in? We've cut off DSTV and we get a very poor signal for normal terrestrial TV. My wife wants her 7-de Laan and I want my moneys worth for my TV licence. For the rest I've got Netflix, Hulu, etc.

Just get DSTV easy view. R29pm includes all the SABC channels, plus a couple of others.

No streaming option that I am aware of.

With DSTV there is the R30 per month Easy View option (in case you already have a decoder & dish).

Alternatively you can get this: http://www.openviewhd.co.za/channels Its free once installed...

Where about in SA are you located?

If you are in an area fairly close to an urban area, (Cape Town, Johannesburg), not sure abour Durban, or Pretoria, but they are offering DTT trials, and should you obtain a DVB-T2 Decoder, and have a decent roof antenna, chances are even if the signal's weak on Analog TV, the signal will come booming in on Digital.

Sorry to hijack this, do you need a tv license if you use it as a computer monitor ?

They don't care what you use it for. They care what it is capable of. So if it has a tuner or a satellite receiver you need to pay.

OpenViewHD is better than the DSTV Easy View option.
You get more for your money, and it's just a once off payment.

It's kind of sad that the same "TV" without the tuner, which is basically just a big computer monitor, is so much more expensive than the TV.
