SABC tax not certain yet

Where and when will the milking of taxpayers end? Honestly! We are only 25% of the population, and we have to pay for everything the government wants funded?

Who is going to stop this and when? I promise you Saartjie Streetvendor watches more TV than I do, I dont have the time as I WORK 90% of my evenings at home to make sure I bring home a proper salary! Now I have to pay for her priviledge as well?

Please shake our government and let them wake up and smell the roses, coffee, whatever it is that they smell. If you are really battling to get monies in for public services, raise VAT by 1%! That would effect the WHOLE population, and the poor is still protected by non-vatable items. Maybe you could even use some of the surplus monies to fix our horrifying roads which was also supposed to be fixed with Tax monies.

Learn to manage funds. Get people into your monopolies that knows how to manage funds! Eskom, SAA, SABC, Telkom, National Roads . . . the service from all of them is atrotious, you keep taking our money to give to them because of mismanagement and you still expect us to smile and say thank you very much?

South Africa is going to loose more and more valuable people, and it would be the governments own fault!

Ok I am done ranting and raving, but I am seriously not done questioning the management skills of our government!

You gotta be kidding me? right? you have got to be kidding!

There is like freaken roadworks Everywhere! sorry if you live in baputotswana but up here it's getting a major facelift

If they use the tax system as a potential revenue collection system, then I would support it if the amount is capped at R250. Not 1% of my earnings!

Should it be 1%, I will gladly donate my tv away so that I do not require a tv license

This is interesting.

Short of shutting down the SABC completely, which is what really should be done, but will never happen, what are your guys suggestions for solving the SABCs funding problems?

Nobody agrees with License Fees, or increasing incoming tax.
We have a suggestion for adding to the VAT rate.

What other constructive, creative ideas do you guys have?

Wont the new DTT decoders have the ability to work like MultiChoice decoders (with smartcards), where you cannot view television unless you have paid.

I smell an alterior motive..

The upcoming digital signal migration might also have something to do with it.

That's probably the simplest cleanest solution if they can implement that.

I see... get everyone shaken up by mentioning that we are going to tax licence fees, then propose the "better option" of forcing people to pay subscribtion fees for DTT - no pay, no signal.

I dont mind.

Manage it properly.

eTV manages to survive just fine on advertising revenues alone, why can't the SABC?

Roadworks

The government will be financiang those roadworks you mention by tolling ALL the highways around JHB, so in addition to paying for the original highway and the upgrades through your tax, you will ALSO be required to pay per km of your highway usage .... they intend using electronic tags to track your on/off ramp and bill you in the backround.

It's getting harder and harder not to move away. I mean, hell, I don't mind paying for stuff. But then it has to work e.g. apparantly almost everything in europe is being taxed but at least they have decent policing, highway systems, telecoms, etc. If someone is going to take my money at least use it properly, but taking 1% of my income to piss it away, I won't stand for that.

Here's another possibility. We still have a yearly fee but because the poor will be the ones impacted with no pay encrypted signals the TV license and digital box will made both be free if you declare to SARS you earn less than X. If you earn more you pay triple the existing fee to subsidise the poor. People will quickly agree if you consider the alternative of paying 1% of your income.

TV is not a vital service, nobody will die if they don't watch TV. I actually suspect people will be more productive if it is removed. What I'm saying is that if you can't afford TV, you don't get TV. There is no need for a 1% tax.

+1

I think theyre doing the same with Eishkom. Propose some crazy increase. Everyone get shaken up, then propose ans equally crazy, but lesser increase and it will be accepted.

Rather make the @ssholes who watch that crap pay for it.

Take it out of the dstv bouquet. Then watch SABC sink.

Much beter idea why doe the SABC not get privatised completely and rely completely on advertising revenue like ETV does. Also condider the fact that Mnet charge more for advertsing than SABC does. There is something wrong there as Mnet has smaller view ship than SABC. Consdiser 1% of income to SABC they have so much money which I pretty sure will just go toward pay the board a huge salary and nothing else. Where if the SABC was privitised they would be forced once again to become a profitable business again

Honestly, I do think that there's a place for public TV. It's great for isolated communities, for childhood education, and for isolated people such as pensioners. So I'd like to see SABC continue.

But: I don't think it needs anything near a 1% tax! A tv licence, maybe - I know we all complain, but it doesn't really cost that much. It should be better managed; it should get most, if not all, it's income from advertising. It should NOT be a burden on the tax payer.

I think part of the reason it needs more money (apart from corruption, bonuses, etc) is because of the mandate to produce/procure and show local content.

Well, considering how everyone here and on news24 is adamant that they never watch SABC, I wouldn't be suprised if advertisers are reluctant to spend money on something no-one's watching :p
