Warning about TV licence increase

The SABC's potential plan to increase TV licence fees will backfire, according to veteran broadcasting journalist Thinus Ferreira.

The public broadcaster recently told Parliament it may approach the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies for permission to hike the fee.

“The same SABC that told the government it sits with almost 90% of people not paying now wants the remaining few people to pay more,” he said.

That elected Gov. playbook after 3 decades by the people who "built the country".

No, no, no! You need to double-down on stupidity - don't just raise it by a few percentage points, double the fee while you're at it!

(No-one is going to be paying anyway)

85% of South Africa does not care or does not watch this crap anyway.

85% a year ago I bet we are into the 90s by now.
I suspect its more so they can sell it to the the debt collectors for more than actual collection.

Pretty sure that an increase will be the thing that stops the last few people who actually do pay from doing so. ANC is just upset because they killed the billions the SABC was generating in advertising (Generations was bring in over a million Rand per episode before 'cloudy' and over 17 billion a year in advertising in general just for TV) must be terrible to have mismanaged and looted this SOE to the point where the barrel is empty.

Well I have a tv licence. Its cost the same as one evenings cheap takeaways.
Then you have no hassle if you need a new tv. If you see a tv on special you just go buy it, no hassles.
But if they decide to up the price to some ridiculous amount, I will skip it as well.

Lets us all gather here for those that don't pay and also those that don't give a flying f***.

So i've been busy, and mostly ignoring the license SMS for the business.

got this gem 2 days ago:

"Your TV license for XXXX has been handed over to us for collection. Please note that failure to respond to this final demand may result in imprisonment, a fine and/or negative credit rating on the credit bureaus. You are requested to pay urgently."
