Hi all,

Any one know what the correct saix cache server address is ? I tried cache.saix.net and I get - Reply from 196.43.11.138: Destination net unreachable.

Regards

I get "403 Forbidden by ACL" on both "dsl-cache.saix.net" and "196.25.253.13"

Firefox:
Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Connection: Settings > Manual Proxy Configuration

debug, you don't acces the page to use the proxy, you enter the credentials into the place texo above is pointing to and then browse normally!

gregmcc, If you're on SAIX then you go through one of their many Netapp Netcache Proxy appliances for your web surfing. So, I guess at any one time a cache in a certain location (logical/ physical?) might outperform a different cache, but I think this would be due to network issues at that time.

die - Yes obviously I entered it in Firefox's proxy settings tab ;) not in the browser bar - lol - but once I enter it I can't browse anything and I get the error mentioned earlier. Will try some other proxies tonight and see what I get.

So what does cache actually do?
Does it only make browsing faster or does it also allow to browse when capped?

Thanks

PS: Sorry for posting in this old thread :)

The cache may speed up browsing, but not always. Try doing it like this, browse without the proxy enabled and if you have problems with speed or latency then try the proxy but even then it's not guaranteed to fix it ;)

You can't use it when you are capped to browse internationally. So if you have a local account (or are capped and have local access), most of the times when you try to use the SAIX cache servers you will get some type of forbidden message :)

From where I am (in Cape Town) it looks like cache.saix.net has better ping times than dsl-cache.saix.net:

Code:
ping cache.saix.net

Pinging ctb-cache1.saix.net [196.25.255.3] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 196.25.255.3: bytes=32 time=11ms TTL=249
Reply from 196.25.255.3: bytes=32 time=11ms TTL=249
Reply from 196.25.255.3: bytes=32 time=10ms TTL=249

ping dsl-cache.saix.net

Pinging ndf-cache1-vif0.saix.net [196.43.9.21] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 196.43.9.21: bytes=32 time=32ms TTL=248
Reply from 196.43.9.21: bytes=32 time=33ms TTL=248

So it looks like cache.saix.net is in Cape Town, while dsl-cache.saix.net is in Jhb.
