SAIX-Verizon peering link problem causes downtime

Is there not ways to prevent one link from affecting so much. Is it not possible for someone as big as Verizon to have a link to another ISP so that there is more than one route ?

It is possible...

...but...

...the problem is Telkom...

South Africa's Internet isn't mature and robust yet. Once they get to that stage, probably a decade off, they'd have fail over networks, and thus cater for almost any eventuality.

mybroadband going down is a real problem:
(1) site doesn't load,
(2) hmm look at mybroadband to see if there is a problem,
(3) mybroadband doesn't load!
(4) crawl into foetal position....
:( for the purposes of clarification: MyBroadband.co.za was not down in this particular instance - what happened is that Telkodemonopolies' SAIX severed SAIX customers from being able to access many websites hosted on Verizon Business' backbone - including mybroadband.co.za.
