No idea what the market rate is these days, but it sure isn't one of the pro's of audit articles... :)

yeah...its a list of thing to consider when choosing between a large firm an a smaller one.
working times, pressure, clients...that kinda thing...is it really worth the extra stress

It doesn't matter what you earn during apprenticeship. They could even pay you nothing.

What you'll make there after will more than make up for it.

This brings me to a another point.

Ever noticed that the people that administrate money (bookkeepers, accountants etc.) makes far more than the people that actually make the money (do the business etc.)

It will depend a bit on your studying process, but put it this way when i started my articles in 2001 & started on a whopping R1900. Thank God those days are long gone

PriceWaterhouse in the Western Cape is paying their first year trainees R 8500 for 2010. This is the best case scenario (i.e you have your Honours degree (CTA)). Your salary won't jump much when you pass QE1 (board exam 1).

I can get you more info on the exact salary breakdown if you want.

I heard KPMG paid the least to their trainees in the big 4, even to their 'slaves' whom passed board and will be promoted to AM next year.

Usually the rates are market related and all the big 4 pays more or less the same in the first 3 years. But then again you do the cr@p work in these years and only a few get to stay on after you qualify.

My GF's sister is in year 3 of her articles at a big4 accounting firm and earns +- R15k p/m.

He he, those were the days! I started articles (with Honours already completed) for R2850 per month. Travel claims saved us and somehow you always had money to party hard. :D

EY durbs is paying between 6 and 7k for your first year up til June. It increases based on performance and also whether you pass your first board exam.

Salary isn't fabulous to start but they are by far one of the best company's to work for! They treat their staff really well, constantly organising functions for staff at the company's expense

The estimates on this thread are pretty much right (except for the ones from a few years ago, damn!). It's around 8500/9000 net when you start but you have to get medical aid, usually a provident fund/ra contribution etc so you looking at about 6k to survive on. Travel claims you can expect 20k/yr or so usually.
15k is a bit on the low side for third year. By mid 2nd year you should be on 15k net.

Like Wall Street.

Junk bond salesman = Lamborgeni

Engineer = Toyota

I think my friends were getting under 10k (gross) a month at EY and KPMG...
Made me glad I studied engineering :D

Yeah I read a couple of weeks ago that a starting salary for a chemical engineer is 293k. No jokes! That's crazy, but I suppose most engineers spend double the time at university than most other people. Although of course once you finish articles, your salary does go up a notch or two.
