Is it possible to use one smtp that will allow u to send an email using either network. For example i'm currently using a webmail and axxess account that go through the saix network and when using an Internet Solutions account the emails will not send. Any idea of overcoming this problem? I know u can change the smtp to the IS address but it's rather inconveniant to have to do this everytime you swap accounts between SAIX and IS.

You could only do that with a server that you authenticate with, say your own mail server or if you have a Gmail account you could use the Google servers.

Very easy - configure the SMTP outgoing server with the details from either IS or SAIX. Under advanced options tick the box "my outgoing server requires authentication" and enter your appropriate username and password for that ISP.

This way all e-mails will be sent via one SMTP server, no matter through which ISP you are actively connected to.

this is not working for me....

i normally use smtp.saix.net for my cybersmart isp but im temp using IS.
does anyone know the smtp for IS ?

wait, wait, this is a toughie, hold, erm

smtp.isdsl.net ;)

What is your email domain - ie the part after the @ sign?

Your best bet is to connect to the server responsible for that domain directly with SMTP AUTH.

Franna have to personally tried the SMTP Auth thing yourself ?

The simplest would be to setup 2 mail accounts and just change the smtp server.Maybe call 1 account "IS" and the other "saix".When u on the IS network sent a mail from the "IS" account and vice versa 4 thw SAIX account

No - but does it actually work in this specfic sceniro ie using 1 smtp for 2 networks

U send all your mail using SMTP Auth cause thats how the security was configured on your SMTP Server. Some smtp servers like smtp.saix.net use IP Policies ie All saix ip ranges can relay thru that mail server

Yes I am fully aware of that... and I could use the SAIX mail server if I wanted to - have in the past.

The point is - I roam across SAIX, IS, Vodacom 3G, iBurst and our work network and refuse to change SMTP server settings every few hours. For that reason I bypass whichever server is available locally and use the central server designated for the domain i'm using and connect via SMTP AUTH.

So basically - you need to determine who the ISP is that is hosting your email address - find out what their server name is and how to go about accessing it via SMTP AUTH (or pop before smtp if that is preferred) and you'll no longer have to deal with changing SMTP servers all the time.

The smtp server u use is based on your internet connection and not on who hosts your mail.

What is the "central server" you use ? Is it your own private /work SMTP Server or is it the smtp.saix.net / smtp.iburst.co.za/smtp.isdsl.net etc

If its your private/Work smtp then of cause you can u smtp auth. However the saix and iburst smtp servers dont use SMTP Auth.So what do u do in that situation ?

That is a fallacy and a notion that ISP's have put into the heads of their users in a supposed attempt at fighting spam.

It does not solve the spam problems and in fact violates all of the new technology standards for sending mail. It is an easy - one size fits all - solution for setting up your outgoing mail and is actually more of a spam risk.

I challenge you to setup a gmail address on say outlook and set the outgoing mail server to be smtp.saix.co.za and see how much of the mail actually gets delivered.

If you are using a SAIX email address then by all means use their servers. If not then you should be sending your mail to the MSA at the ISP where your mail is hosted. And when you are not within the 'whitelisted' IP Policy then your ISP should provide you with SMTP AUTH access to the server to send mail while you are roaming.

If they do not provide these things then i recommend you find a new ISP.

OMG ,

Can u just answer the orginal question.I dont come on 2 this forum to debate stuff.I just want to know how do can u use 1 smtp server if you roam between say iburst,SAIX,IS etc.The fact is you cant use SMTP Auth as a fix it for this scenrio.Maybe Franna and shed more light on this. The reason is that it would save people alot of hassle.

I provided the solution much further up

If you want to use one server then you should be using the one designated by the ISP the provides you with your email address. Any other server that will allow you to connect from any connection would be an open relay and be blacklisted be the RBL's

Please could you eleborate on this as I have never had a problem with it.

I have the same problem. I can't access my domain SMTP when international get caped on IS, cause it is in the US. So I use IS's SMTP. But then when local get capped too and I use WebAfrica's prepaid, then I must change SMTP.

Tried entering my pop username and password (OpenWeb's mail account) for IS SMTP authentication. Mesages still got send on IS, but not on SIAX. IS SMTP seem to just ignore AUTH.

I only change SMTP's like twice a month, so its not such a big deal, but it would still be nice to have only one SMTP.

So what your trying to say is that if i use a mweb email i must connet to saix smtp if im using telkom ISP? uhm dont think so. Each company has their own smpt server for sending mail, sure you can use any smtp to send mail but most of them require auth. So the best bet wil be to use the smtp of the company that your domain is registered with.
