Samsung 46" Full HD Edge LED

lol, i could see the diff between full hd and hd ready. would rather go for the best than regret it later, price isnt that big a diff. i study computer engineering, i like to see whats possible :) i agree 99% of the time it doesn't matter, but that other 1% its useful ;)

:)

Fair enough. I get what you're saying. The experts than cannot tell the difference are clearly commenting on that 99%.

Plasma is and always has been the technology designed for home theatre, and sport as well. The only instance they are not good is for connecting to a PC that get's worked on, i.e. excessive static images in Start bars, windows, etc.

Plasma has deeper blacks, and more accurate & natural colours. There is a reason why the best TV in the world is a plasma. Plasmas also handle motion much better than LCDs, which is why is is the chosen technology for sport.

Thx :) I`ll go have a look at a few in the store and compare them based on sight as well. good to know the pro`s and cons. I`l have it hooked to a pc, but not standing around showing nothing, so i dont think burn in will be a issue.

Correct, using it with a PC to game/watch media is no problem.

Please, when in store, don't be fooled by the LCD's brightness. LCD always has been superior in terms of brightness. Please bear in mind your TV room does not have shop-light fluorescents/halide lighting.

I still prefer full HD ;P

off to bed now, thx for all the advice and comments! :)

It's probably better to view both in a completely dark room to be honest. With LCD, you see the black when the lights are turned off. With plasma you don't.

I think i`l go to 3 or 4 stores, have a good look at both technologies and the range of tv`s on offer. Compare the prices and pro`s and cons. And then buy whichever one the sales lady with the biggest boobs is selling.

Does LED fall under LCD basicly with the pros and cons? With the much higher contrast ratio would the blacks also be deeper?

Salespeople are the worst to ask about LCD vs plasma. 9 times out of 10, they will advise LCD. They are stuck in the past like most people, based on preconceived perceptions of plasma's previous pitfalls. Plasma has improved a lot over the last 3 years. There is virtually no burn-in, lifespan has been increased to over 100,000 hours, electricity consumption is negligibly more than LCD, etc.

Salespeople will tell you that plasmas will burn-in, that they don't last long, that they need to be re-gassed , that they chow electricity, etc.

If you need an informed opinion, ask us.

I had a look at the 46" LED when I was buying a tv, and was not impressed at all.
I will agree that sd content looks better on plasma (50c550) when side by side with an LCD(46c550) but SD is just crappy on both :p
I've had both due to unforeseen circumstances :) with the plasma konkoning out and will say I'm happier with the lcd I have, mainly because I use it for gaming and hd movies/series.
Colours are actually better on the LCD IMO and the blacks are basically the same not that greyish black on other lcd's...

I have noticed the lower Hz of LCD affecting soccer games as sometimes you will get the effect of a image lingering there (only notice it on close up shots of the players when they running), but I do not notice it with rugby or cricket or normal tv..

Edge-lit LED LCDs are basically the same, with a slightly higher dynamic contrast ratio - which means bugger-all under normal home viewing conditions. Dynamic contrast is tested under pitch black conditions, and under home conditions where there is ambient light, it is simply irrelevant. Just more marketing gimmick from the manufacturers, where bigger numbers fetch higher value to the uninformed.

Full LED array LCDs with local dimming are much better than LCD/edge-lit LED LCD, and offer superior colours and blacks.

Until you compare it side by side with plasma.

Look, I'm sad that your plasma was DOA, which made you change your mind to get a LCD instead, after commenting on how much better the plasma was than LCDs at the same price-point when you were in the shop. But the truth is the benefit of plasma for you would be little, since you use yours mainly for gaming. With HD content, non-sport, the differences between LCD and plasma are a lot less. But for sport specifically, plasma is the way.

Let's not even mention the exceptional value plasma offers - bigger screens with superior picture quality for sport and SD, for a lot less than smaller LCDs.

Seriously though, if you can't notice the poor motion of your entry LCD with cricket - where there are very fast-paced balls, etc. - then yeah, dunno. :p

Sure, SD content sucks in general, especially ours which is 480i - effectively 240p AFAIK? But again, when you compare it with plasma, it's night/day. And plasma with SD content from a HD PVR is exceptionally good.

Went to Digital Experience, my old man just bought the LED for R9999.00, compared it to the 50" plasma.......no comparison.
The LED was brighter, looked more alive.
In my opinion there is no comparison between LED and Plasma.
LED IMO is the winner
I a only talking about watching movies, not sport

What was the size/model of the LED LCD for R9999?

I don't blame you or your dad, but brightness under shop lighting is a common reason why people perceive LCD/LED to be better. Put it in a normal living room with normal incandescent/compact fluorescent ambient lighting and you will see which one is truly better.

By the way, that's LED edge-lit LCD, not a LED.

Disruptive fanboi'ism

Just asked my Magic 8-ball if people would soon find themselves barred from this section is this continues. The response was Almost Certainly.

I actually tend to agree with Dolby on this one.....

Buddy, I think a lot of people feel the same way, which is probably why a warning was handed out. I know, personally, that I've been looking at TVs and this entire subsection is basically useless to me since any queries I may have would be greeted by "PLASMAPLASMAPLASMAAAAA!!! *Froth at the mouth*", and thus I don't bother asking here. I've looked at plasma. I've looked at LCD. I've always preferred LCD and I reckon my word counts for something, since I used to work for Sony in the UK and have been exposed to a broad range of products. 6 years ago, lowerend LCD were rubbish, sure, but these days, even the so-called "entry level" units I see on the shelves, impress me quite a bit. Personally, I'm looking at rather splurging a bit more and getting a 120Hz model, but honestly, I don't feel that it makes that big a difference.

Also, don't discard Sony! In recent years, I've honestly been quite disappointed by them, but after having a gander at their offerings, they're an option too. Do yourself a favour and go to the Dions Wired in Woodmead and check out their display, since they have both SD and proper HD feeds running into their rather extensive collection on TVs. Honestly, with the FHD feeds they're pushing, there really isn't very much in it between the different sets. I find that the slightly higher end units, specifically LED-backlit ones, have imagery that pop a bit more, with especially animated (Yes, I know running Pixar films is cheating) looking especially vibrant. That may not be everyone's taste, though, and I for one am not sure how I feel about it just yet.
If you're going to be pushing 90% HD stuff, like I am, your choice is pretty simple in that you mostly need to consider only value-for-money. If you're going to be pushing a fair chunk of low quality DSTV garbage, then it becomes more tricky, as that is where the difference between most sets lie.

Anyway, like I used to tell my clients: Look at all the TVs and decide which ones you prefer. They can all be fantastic on paper, but that doesn't mean jack if they don't render the images in a pleasing manner.
