Samsung Galaxy 10.1 tablet local availability

I finally ordered my 10.1. I originally planned on get it here but I just couldn't justify spending 7.5k on a tablet. I mainly am going to use it at home in any case so 3G wasn't really a necessity. Similarly, I didn't have a need for 32Gb, 16 should be enough for me. If they had brought the 16Gb Wifi version for +-R5000 I would have bought it in a heartbeat.

In any case, I decided to order it from Amazon in the US using shipito as a shipping agent. I will keep you post it on the process if anyone else is interested in ordering but doesn't know how. I decided to go for Amazon and shipito as opposed to ebay as it actually turned out cheaper.

So far I am paying $500 for the tablet, $3.99 for 1 day shipping (prime trial). Shipito charges $8.50 and shipping will come to $37 with Fedex. If I am lucky, the tablet will arrive by Friday. In total and that includes customs, shipping, etc. it will cost me betweeen R4500 and R4600.

Wow thats a good price.. Please post some links to Amazon...

How reliable is shipito? This is the first time I'm hearing of it.. That FedEX shipping is quite cheap, a few months back I bought a Notebook from the U.S and paid about $100 (heavier box), but my total price for the notebook was still much cheaper than buying it locally (saved around 4000 - 4500)

What link do you want? Simply go to amazon.com and search for the 10.1 :), it's $499..

Sorry, FedEx is actually $47 for international economy, not 37! Still very cheap. The company is able to negotiate bulk rates, hence its cheaper. Their service is ok as long as you use usps, fedex or dhl as a shipping option. Maybe they are not as good as myus when it comes to consolidation and special requests, but for a simple 1 parcel forward they are all you will need and much cheaper.

Okay, so I've also joined the Honeycomb crowd today. Got myself the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 P7500. Will set it up tonight (haven't even opened the box yet). With an iPhone 4, iPad 1, SGS 2 and now the Android GT 10.1 I'm fully equipped to mess around in both ecosystems. Wish I could get a PlayBook to mess around with also ...

yeah $47 is very cheap for Fedex, I think I need to try out shipito lol...

Anyone know where I can find a HP touchpad, I checked Amazon but they dont have any on sale, I'm looking for one for $99 as was reported in the media.. I guess most would be sold out, but maybe I can get lucky

Let us know if your parcel was delivered to your door and if there were any additional costs, like VAT?

FedEx (Supaswift [local agent]) delivers to your door.. They usually send you an Invoice (vat, customs etc), and once payment has been cleared they dispatch the goods..

Of course there will be VAT :). 14% on 110% value or 15.4% effectively. And that's it, I have imported so many things so I'm talking from experience.

The cost of the tablet was R3700, take 15.4% on that you get R570. So in total R4600 if you choose the Fedex Economy Shipping. Add R200 for Priority or take of R150 if you use USPS.

So my tablet finally arrived. Took exactly 7 days from Amazon in California to my place, using a re-shipper. Total cost R4800 for the 16Gb Wifi including all taxes and Fedex shipping! :)

Kewl.. Did you choose FedEx Economy or Priority for the 7 Day Delivery ? Did it come with a case ?

I chose Priority. Going back DHL would probably have been quicker and better at $5 more. Otherwise USPS also works well and is much cheaper.

To all of you who have ordered the tablet overseas, I just want to know what happens if you find that the tablet experiences the screen issues? i.e. the newton ring/ oil patch issue under the screen?

Can you stilll return the tablet or do you have to go through samsung. While anyone can see that the device is cheaper to import, it would be a pity if not much can be done.

To anyone who has had the issue.(I returned the device myself because of it) I also want to find out, what the consequence of having the newton rings are......i.e. does it cause serious damage to the screen or is it just a spot that appears periodically. Has anyone found this to damage their screen.

Its a risk you have to take. You can ship it back but it will cost you quite a bit in shipping (+-R1500) and it may take a while. Simply wait a few weeks and order from a place like Amazon where you're almost certain to get the newest stock as the newer models should come without the issue

Hey Chaps - hoping someone can post something for me quick.

When your tablet is connected to KIES (Samsungs software) - on the main page there is a 'Firmware Information' Tab.

Could someone please let me know what the 'Current Firmware Version:' states?

Any help would be much appreciated :)
