Samsung Galaxy Note 2

I am new to flashing roms, and needing some advice. ive read as much as i can on xda, but just want to clarify

i am planning to use TWRP since it seems the more versatile one.

1. Do i need to be rooted first?
2. Can i do an efs backup without being rooted
3. I assume that flashing a custom recovery increases the binary count. How would i flash back to stock and reset this count if i ever need to take the phone in, and does a triangle show before the phone boots if you have tripped this binary counter.
4. i will be using CM, i only see nightlies available for CM10.2 for the N7100, which one is the most stable, or should i use the CM10.1 stable
5. What chances are there of being malware in the roms one flashes?
6. Can this all be done without a PC?
7. if i had to flash the leaked india firmware, can i flash that with using stock recovery

If one can recommend a better rom than CM, please let me know

Pretty sure the nandroid backup is a complete image of the system. It's not just apps and data...

It sounds correct as far as I know as well, but it doesn't include internal as well as external sdcards/storage. It is only system, apps, data and modem.

Hi guys, I've been using Ditto Note 3 ROM for a week now but I don't get any joy from the battery life.

I want to try Omni Rom. Who has used it and how does it compare to Cyanogenmod on the Note 2?

I'm on the most recent OmniRom 4.4 nightly. Unfortunately I haven't tried out CM on the Note 2 yet so I don't know how the two would compare. Things I love about OmniRom are:
1. Battery life has been great so far. Depending on usage I'm averaging a day to a day and a half per charge.
2. The ROM is very responsive, especially when using the ART runtime (I had a few FCs on the gallery and camera apps when switching to ART last last month but those were sorted out in later nightlies).
3. It's a very bare bones ROM. I love running only the ROM, gapps and only the apps I installed after flashing.
4. It allows OTA updates.
5. It's been very stable to date. Apart from a few FCs on the earlier nightlies, it's been very smooth sailing.

Thanks, I'm busy downloading it now!

What is this ART runtime you speak of??

It's a new runtime introduced in Android 4.4; an alternative to the existing Dalvik runtime. There are a number of articles explaining ART way better than I could. Google 'art vs dalvik' for some good comparative articles. Here's one to get you started: http://www.androidauthority.com/art-vs-dalvik-315874/

Thanks, I've read the link and from there it states that some apps don't work with ART, specifically WhatsApp. Does ART & Dalvic run together, so when an app doesn't support ART it runs on Dalvic?

Also, when installing OMNIROM, where do I choose ART?

My Whatsapp worked fine on ART. Not sure if they run concurrently but I don't think so considering it required a reboot and it specifically indicates the runtime environment. Can't recall the exact place for the setting but it was in Developer Options iirc. Somewhere in the deep, dark settings there is a runtime option...

Thanks guys, I'm sure I'll find it. Going to start flashing in a few minutes

1. Never had any issues running Whatsapp with ART. Whatsapp is probably my most frequently used app and I have never experienced any problems or FCs.
2. ART and Dalvic don't run together. You can switch between the two but a reboot is required after switching. If any of your vital apps don't work in ART it's a trivial task to switch back to Dalvic (see next point)
3. Dev Tools -> Developer options -> Select runtime (The Dev Tools app is packaged along with Omni Rom)

Don't keep us hanging man! Did you get it flashed?

I did flash it and I like it very much! :D

Pro's:
I like the default camera. It feels more snappy, especially when recording videos.
The stock gallery app is nice too.
I also like the OTA nightly updates.
Google Now which opens when you slide left from the home screen is also cool.
The system feels quciker.

Cons:
The Phone app is a little weird to use. I guess it takes some time to get used to, but IMHO Samsung's phone app is more intuitive.
Wakelock Detector App doesn't work anymore, I think because I switched to ART. Maybe will be fixed in next update.
In the slide down notificaitons toggle bar thingy, I miss the Mobile Data toggle button

Bugs:
When you open the app drawer and press the Options haptic button, it opens Launcher's settings but its behind the app drawer so you can't use it anyway. I used to access Settings from here in Touchwiz.

I can't comment on battery life at this stage.

Overall I love this ROM and I'm excited to see it develop.

Thanks for the help!

EDIT: One more thing, where do I get multi window working like in this video?

Seems like I need to enable it somewhere?

The 4.4 phone app definitely takes some getting used to but I prefer it now that I've used it for a while.

Wakelock is not 4.4 compatible yet: "Wakelock Detector currently does not work with KitKat. Google made some changes of accessing to battery stats. We are working hard on finding a solution. We ask you to be patient, and will let you know as soon as we fix it."

Agreed on the mobile data toggle on the pulldown menu. There's an extra 'click' involved now to get to that button. You need to select the mobile data icon on the pull down menu and you can then access the toggle on the screen that opens. I do believe that their are apps available that allow you to customise the pull down menu.

Regarding the Settings option been hidden - I've seen it been commented on in the XDA developer threads. It's a known bug but probably a low priority one as you can do a long-touch on your home screen and get to that settings option from there.

I thought multi-window was only available in Omnirom 4.3 but I may be mistaken. I'll see what I can find.
