Samsung Galaxy Note 2

I am sick to my stomach.

This damn OTA is just not coming and the firmware from Sammobile is 1.2 GB

Ive been trying to download from work for a week now and every night there is a power failure and the download cancels.

Is there no way to force the OTA? How can you fool your phone to think it is in india or france?

It gets pushed by the carrier IIRC.
That is the reason we androids fall so far behind the isheeps in OS updates

But we have the unlocked version. Should be a way. Ive tried the force stop on google framework services. Ive tried messing with the gps engine. I am not getting this thing to update and I cannot download thos at work its just annoying me. Ota 470mb vs firmware packet from sammobile 1200mb. Its kaak annoying.

At the risk of coming across as anything but concerned over the frustrations you guys are experiencing, I'd like to very gently remind everyone that one of the many benefits of owning an Android phone is that you can install custom ROMS! A lot of these offer the very latest Android features, better battery life and performance and daily OTA updates. These days it's also much easier to flash these ROMs.

thanks, I'm not a super or power user, a standard ROM meets my everyday needs, it's also why I stick to Windoze and don't mess around with Linux or other OS's on my laptops and PC's :p

Yeah and with these samsungs we need our warranties intact.

Your analogy falls a little short as in this case you would simply be trying a customised version of Windows as opposed to a brand new (and fiddlier) OS such as Linux but I get your point. What many people don't realise (not you necessarily) is that the only intimidating part is getting the ROM on your phone. Using the new ROM is in many cases much easier compared to a stock ROM. I'll use one example to illustrate this - updates: OTA updates on OMNIRom are much easier than they are on stock. They're not locked to a geographic location, they're much smaller because they are made nightly and I can control over which network connections I want to download them (3G, Wifi, etc...). All with a very simple menu.

Not sure if you're aware but it is possible to revert back to stock if your phone needs to be taken in.

Even after knox? That was embedded in the december 4.3 ota?

There is a way to avoid tripping the knox counter when flashing as I recall. It was addressed in the instructions if memory serves. Haven't looked at those in ages but I'll have a dig around when I'm in front of my PC again

So if I like touchwiz. What is close to that with all these great custom rom benefits?

Is there a Vanilla rom for note 2 and how does that compare to the official one?

Think it's called Ditto. I'll get back to you on both questions if you don't mind. Just been sitting in front of a PC all day and running a Black Ops Warrior Race tomorrow so digging through xda threads right now will have to wait :D

Ditto DN3. Note 3 software on the Note 2.

Personally prefer CM11 on my Note though. No bloatware and full control over startup apps, app permissions, etc.
Can even disable Google+ from running at all.

Thanks for your patience! So, although I never had to deal with Knox during the flashing/rooting of my Note 2 (it was pre 4.3) it has definitely become a valid concern. Looks like it is possible to deknox your phone though using Dr Ketan’s Multitool. More info here: http://techbeasts.com/2014/01/17/how-to-deknox-samsung-galaxy-s3-s4-note-2-note-3/. I think this covers your backside regarding warranty but I'm struggling to get a clear go/no-go in the threads on XDA. Unfortunately I had very limited time available to dig around. If warranty is a concern I'd highly recommend a more thorough investigation just to be 100% sure.

I will be the first to admit though that this adds extra complexity to the flashing process (in my opinion) so keep that in mind.

Regarding your second question regarding Touchwiz, Conack is correct in his above reply. The ROM is called Ditto DN3: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2504016. Haven't tried it myself but looking at their thread, they have quite nice instructions laid out in there.

I'm using DN3 ROM - v5 - based off the latest KitKat for our phones, with some added apps taken from the S5. Be sure to install the ROM & the update - links are in the thread Martin linked. Ditto Note is also Knox-free. I love this ROM

So I finally flashed stock 4.4.2

So far so good. After installation and first boot it gave me an annoying Register Software Update that would not let me register, kept of failing immediately.

This sorted itself out over the next hour of applicatoion updates.

I did a factory wipe and the wipe along with kitkat seems to make a helluva difference.

Phone is smoother and faster alltogether.

Unfortunately my connection at work is up to isht today, and I cannot get to all my apps, its been uppdating for the last 3 hours and still about 10 bloatwarez to update.
