Samsung Galaxy S: which GPS navigation app are you using?

Hi there

Which GPS navigation app are you using on your Samsung Galaxy S (or any other Android phone for that matter)? The Galaxy S only comes with Google Maps which doesn’t have voice prompts in South Africa at the moment.

I am not going to root my phone and as such I only have access to the free apps in the Market. Are there any free navigation apps with South African maps? If so, which one are you using?

Can one “procure” such an app without rooting ones phone? ;)

Google Maps does have turn-by-turn (albeit through text-to-speech), but you have to install the Brut mod for it to work. Just Google "Brut mod for Android" and you should get the XDA link somewhere in the results. I've used it before and it works 100%. AFAIK you don't need to have a rooted phone anymore for the Brut mod to work.

Also, why don't you want to root the phone? You can undo the root again with a simple click... :confused: I think people are unnecessarily scared of these techno-terms for Android like "rooting" and "ROM flashing". I've done them all and can safely say my phone is none worse for the wear. In fact, rooting and flashing custom ROMs just heightens the ownership experience by an unimaginable degree.

You can buy Co-Pilot from their website, so there is no need to root your device.

Thanks for the info on Brut mod!

I'm not that scared of rooting my phone. I only got it on Monday and I am still getting used to Android. Give me a couple of months and my phone will be all pimped out.
 
The first thing you have to do is download "One Click Lag Fix" and get it over with. Read up on it, it'll make your ownership experience SO much better. Until, that is, you flash a Froyo ROM and implement the No-RFS, EXT4/a option in Universal Lag Fix... :love:
