Anyone know when the Samsung i9000 Galaxy S will be available locally on contracts?
It's a newly released phone I know, but it looks pretty awesome:)

Samsung phones suck ass! They're slow and unresponsive at best, whatever you do don't get a touch screen.

The Galaxy has gotten pretty favourable review so far and the screen is apparently amazing.

On Topic - I have no idea when it's getting here.

According the well timed news article on mybb it should be here mid-end July. It's been getting some great reviews, so I'll wait before getting my upgrade :)

Iv had the samsung F700 touchscreen phone for almost 2 years, maybe it was a little unresponsive sometimes. But there was never really anything wrong with it. Best phone iv had. Going for blackberry now though.

Maybe that's ur opinion .. have had my I900 Omnia for almost 2 years and still love the phone! Use it for everything and it's just amazing, responsive and provides me more than what I need!

Also about to upgrade and the Galaxy S sounds really nice ... hoping it's here soon!! :)

I actually phoned Samsung SA - they claimed it will not be launced in SA, but other sources (including http://www.samsungblog.co.za/) says it will be released.

Think the latest info was mid to end July.

It will definitely be released in South Africa in Q3. Samsung Mobile SA has confirmed this.

(Disclosure/Disclaimer: I work as part of the Samsung Blog team but on MyBB in my private capacity so my views on this site do not necessarily represent those of Samsung)

@ mofyah :
Any idea of a more specific date? And any info on Android 2.2 on the Galaxy ?

Nope, just that it will be released at the end of July, after the Wave which launches mid-July. I'll need to get official information on whether it will run Froyo out-the-box or not.

Internal Storage ( Memory )

I was looking at the HTC Desire but it only has 576MB RAM -- surely a mistake on the part of HTC

Maybe the new Samsung Galaxy is a better option -- runs Android 2.2 as well

Galaxy S

Other features include a 5-megapixel camera, 16GB of onboard memory, micro-SD support for up to 32GB and the ability to record video in 720p HD.

RAM / ROM / RUM

MidnightWizard, RAM is not storage space.
It is memory used by applications (and the OS) while they are running.
There are no phones available yet (as far as I know) with more RAM than the Desire, although several with about the same amount.
The Galaxy S also has 512MB RAM according to GSM Arena:

Thanks

I always think of ROM ( Read ONLY Memory ) as the sort of stuff that is made up of FLASH chips for firmware and boot loaders -- BIOS -- etc ie EEPROM's

RAM -- Random Access Memory -- sticks of memory that go on your motherboard ( working memory )

Storage -- Magnetic Storage -- Hard Disk Drive ( or SSD -- Solid State Memory -- also for storage )

Your OS is stored in the storage memory ( NON-Volatile) and then fed into the RAM when the machine is running.

Looks like these smart phones work somewhat differently.

Looks like the OS AND Apps get stored in the ROM -- a place I would normally only expect "firmware"
Perhaps in this case the "firmware" -- IS -- boot loader PLUS OS ?

Looks like RAM is RAM and used in the same way -- the more the better. ( 512 MB is not really all that much -- I am sure they could shoehorn in a One GB chip )

Fact remains -- the Desire does not have any internal onboard STORAGE ( has an external SD card to which you cannot save / store stuff -- until rectified by Android 2.2 ( FROYO )

Have I explained myself a bit better now ????

I always made jokes about Samsung mobile phones, but the Galaxy is definitely a serious contender.

Just have to find out if you can still send free smses between your Samsung fridge, microwave, washing machine and phone, if you have a Samsung mobile. :p

Galaxy S

Hi Guy's

I have been following this device for some time now , I also phoned Samsung Mobile South Africa 0860 SAMSUNG(0860 726786) , They cannot Confirm a launch date , The guy i spoke to say's it all depends on the Operators (Vodacom , MTN , CellC ) To place orders for the phone ,Before that can happen a device needs to be ordered Brought to South Africa it then needs to be tested on all the operator to see if it will work on our infrastructure ,Then only will they be ordered in bulk , I also phoned Samsung Shop Inside Vodaworld in Midrand , They can also not Confirm When it will be available , As per them , They usually get information about a device 2 - 3 months Prior to it beeing launched the 4 guy's i spoke to , never even heard about the device before my call .

Also Phoned The Vodacom Handset Upgrades department , They also cannot confirm and gave me the same story as their Samsung shop inside the building.

The majority of people in the cellphone places had never heard about the Desire until AFTER it had launched, so I wouldn't despair too much yet. The suppliers etc are also very loathe to give out dates as to when a phone will be released, as the exact dates are often out of their control. It will likely still be a month or two before it hits our shores, but dont be put off by the fact that noone has heard of the phone.

Mail i just got from Vodacom

Dear

Kindly be advised that the handset has been received for testing. We are unable to confirm when and if the device will be approved for use on the network.

Regards

I just phoned Smasung SA Again , The guy i spoke to said he had confirmed with his Manager , Which Confirmed that we will not be recieving the device . He also ask again to make sure.
So Guy's I have done all i can to try find out , Does anyone else have any more information or better sources.

They said that if we are lucky it "Might" Come here , But it wont be anytime soon.He also mentioned that even though there might be handsets here , They will not be supported and Warrenty will not be applicable. So they guy's importing them from expansys will have no local support on the device.

So I hope to be proved wrong , Because i'm really looking forward to this device , And i'm due for an upgrade and my pocket's buring , The other option might then be the Desire from HTC.
