Samsung Galaxy S2 update in South Africa: problems explained

After update the phone cannot connect to Vodacom.
Insert SIM into another phone and disable pin to solve the problem.
Hope this will be fixed with a patch soon, because now I need to run without SIM pin security.

KIES is a total f-up Samsung. It downloads the new firmware and when done KIES disconnects my phone and can't get it to reconnect again. It then starts the download process all over again and we go through this cycle over and over again.

I then tried the odin route ... but the firmware download is a mess. First full download file was corrupt and I had to download all over again but never got anywhere near 100 MB since.

Never ever had these issues with Apple. We wait FOREVER to get ICS and then it is such a messy effort from Samsung. I'm seriously losing my patience with Samsung.

If you sold a known quantity of S2's how can you be surprised by the demand for ICS downloads?

Why didn't you download the firmware through torrents?

Like with all things Android all the struggles are left to the end-user who hopefully is a geek or knows one. People buy Android devices out of curiosity and because it looks so cool but then sit inside an ecosystem where OEM's just don't give a damn.

Ja that is a bit problematic. You would think with this being the second of the S line it would be sorted out already. But I did all of my over the air updates quite easily. This one I had to go through odin, because I went custom. But I have the official Vodacom rom on. It would be easier to just wait a few days before trying the OTA option again. Kies never really worked for me.

Kies screwed over a mate too. It's stuck on 5%. Did you just disconnect it, then try again?

Or do you need to boot into recovery mode and then format phone?

With KIES it never gets to actually installing the firmware. It bombs out every time just when the download is complete. No recovery mode boot etc with KIES. With Odin I never got that far because I have no firmware yet.

Never ever had these issues with Apple..

I have had far worse problems with iOS downloads, on one of the iPod Touch upgrades, it was a massive file and I had to download it four times, eventually had to resort to some unorthodox procedure.

I haven't found the Apple upgrades any better than Android, in fact, in my case, it has been way worse.

That's why I don't use Apple products any more.

Should it just alert me when I plug the phone into my PC and run Kies?

On MTN and nothing happens currently.
