I received Samsung HT-E355K as an gift, but it seems its actually useless.

Seems only has RCA as audio input? Who still uses this crap anyway???

I thought optical was standard by now . It does have HDMI out.

My tv does not have RCA out only headphone jack which will probably just have 2.1 sound.

So is there anyway I can it to play 5.1 or should I just return it to takealot?

Edit found this info:

By default when the home theatre receives a stereo signal into digital in or when playing back an audio CD, it will reproduce only 2 channel through the front right and left speakers. To have the home theatre feed stereo signal to all speakers, press MODE button on the HT remote, until the LCD display on the HT shows mode as being MATRIX. or select the Pro_Logic II button
This will enable all speakers both for 5.1 and stereo

Now you know why you received it as a gift.

These things are only really meant to playback surround audio from DVDs and aren't designed to be full surround systems for other components in your setup.

Plugged in cable from earphones jack on my tv to the RCA input on the system . Works nicely just not nearly as loud as playing music from the usb .

Still decent enough for now.

Will see if I can get converter for optical to RCA to see if the system is louder.

I see it supports

ARC (Audio Return Channel)
Yes

This means if your TV supports it, the sound from the HDMI cable plugged into your TV will playback through the device.
