Looking at the photos and comparing them to my S3 it seems like the microphone hole was the source of the explosion/heat?

LOL this is getting a bit silly... One phone burns out because of a car charger and there's a zillion articles/threads all over the internet.

Car kits/chargers are the work of the devil, the real news should be when a phone doesn't get messed up by one.

Ok so let me get this straight
1 S3 flamed out and melted out (it did not explode) and some people is up in arms
This under dodgy circumstances which the user himself admits may have caused the issue

Wait how many Iphones had the connection issue and how many oneX phones have the Wifi issue?
Damn sight more than 1
So I will get worried when the reports start coming in that the S3's is bursting into flames right left and center.

Samsung probes exploding Galaxy S III

Samsung Electronics Co said it was investigating reports that one of its flagship Galaxy S III smartphones exploded in a user’s car in Ireland...

Garmin recalled a lot of their gps units at one stage. The email I got from them at the time said something like "a batch of units could catch fire if left very hot conditions, like a car in the sun, for extended period". It was reportedly a battery fault.
Guess it could happen to any battery that gets too hot.

The phone was NOT faulty

An external energy source was the cause for the GALAXY SIII that appeared to have heat-related damage

Samsung contracted Fire Investigations UK (FIUK), an independent third-party organization, to determine the exact cause of the damage inflicted on a GALAXY SIII unit, which had allegedly been affected by heat.

The damaged device and additionally provided devices were examined and exposed to a series to tests. The investigation summary states that “The energy source responsible for generating the heat has been determined as external to the device” and “the device was not responsible for the cause of the fire.”

Additionally, the investigation results state, "The only way it was possible to produce damage similar to the damage recorded within the owner's damaged device was to place the devices or component parts within a domestic microwave."

The device user in Ireland has posted on "Boards.ie" admitting that he was responsible for the damage.
