Samsung's Kies software reported today that I can upgrade the Samsung Wave's firmware.

I proceeded in doing so, but just as the binaries are starting to download, the process 'MSC.Firmware.Update.exe' causes an illegal operation and it stops completely.

Also, monitoring the process in Task Manager, I noticed that the memory usage is quite substantial, even more than 1GB at times.

I tested it on two different systems and am getting the same results, which means the Kies software itself is to blame.

Anyone else getting this error?

I had the same problem and it said network connection lost,i just kept on saying retry and it downloaded it in the end.Think its a problem with server.

Yes, after some hectic searching I found out that their servers are being hammered. I tested KIES on a few different systems today, and on all of them the app crashed.

Just found this version which seems to work (so far) as it starts to download the binary files without crashing.

Will update this post again upon completion - whenever that may be.

Update: The update completed without any further hassles. Took about an hour from start to finish.

Samsung has now publicly admitted the issues with the firmware update and apologized for it:

http://www.facebook.com/SamsungApps

"If you are having trouble with the Firmware Upgrade function on your current Kies version, please delete the version that you have and download the updated version (1.5.3.10093.80), which can be found on (http://www.samsungapps.com/) right now. Again, we are sorry for the inconvenience. We appreciate your feedback."

#@!%$!

The new firmware makes the battery run down overnight from a full charge.

I would highly recommend staying away from it. No changes have been made to the interface anyhow.

Found the latest firmware update for UK Vodafone and flashed the phone with it.

Problem sorted.

GPS definitely locks on much faster now.

my phone turns itself off like once every two days and then i find it asking for sim and phone lock code. Its really irritating. And it did this twice today!

so i downloaded the latest kies software like an hour back. To install it i need to be connected to the internet which then takes at least 30mins to download more UPDATES just so i can install the program. 1st i installed on win 7 and the program kept on crashing while trying to do the firmware update. I am now trying it on xp, although i hav to do the update again..... KIES is really stupid!

LOL.
Wait till your iphone crahes and it does not wanna reset on pc(itunes),you then have to manualy reset phone which is a nightmare!!
While your trying to get it fixed you dont have a phone as it wont go on without itunes rebooting it,and itunes keeps giving errors. No thats STUPID!!

I share your frustration.

Try downloading the Kies version in one of my previous posts and do not allow it to upgrade itself.

Use that version then to do the firmware upgrade.

Thnx roadrunner. I downloaded that software a few days back and then the firmware upgrade started. Sorry for repeating myself but the only reason i wanted the firmware upgrade was cuz the phone restarted by itself and after the upgrade its still doing the same. Is it only my phone? Any type of gesture setting or something i cant find that u guys know about?

Try and do a hard reset by entering *2767*3855# on the keypad. Remember to backup your data before you do this, as it wipes it clean.

If this doesn't work, Google the terms 'Multiloader 5.6.4' and 'S8500XXJID.rar'. The flash process is very easy.

S8500XXJID is the very latest firmware for the Wave which loads Bada 1.2 on it. I noticed a few new features on this one.

ooo okay this looks great even the hard reset might fix this by itself. they should include those codes in the manual. Big thnx for this. I got the 5.56 multiloader atm but the only file i can get for S8500XXJID.rar is at hotfile.com and its downloading a massive 2kb/s.... but i will check further and maybe i get lucky. the samsungfirmwareworld.com site does not want to let me register. so much trouble for all this. lol

Before i go about doing this i wanna make sure i got all the files as i know firmware can screw up the device. For the boot files i selected the BOOTFILES folder with "boot_loader.mbn" and "dbl.mbn".
I selected all the other relevant files.
I have no FOTA, TUNE, ETC and PFS files. So im leaving them blank???
Just a quick screenshot of what i selected here.

I have installed this firmware and my phone keeps on rebooting the moment I insert the usb cable. So i am unable to install the old firmware

Any ideas out there how to fix this

this is exactly the reason i havnt done it yet. i have all the files waiting on my pc.
The one site i read said that u should hard reset it after you flashed the phone.

  1. Turn off your phone and take out the SIM and memory card.
  2. Hold down the volume down button and the camera button, then press the power button and hold it in until the display reads "Download mode".
  3. Connect the phone via USB and open the Multiloader program. Test that the comms are good by clicking on the "Port Search" button.
  4. If you are flashing with S8500XXXJID, set it up like this screenshot:http://img257.imageshack.us/img257/8338/s8500firmwareupgrade.jpg
(Never mind the E: drive at the beginning of the filenames, I have it on an external drive, yours will start with C: )
  5. Flash the phone and wait for it to finish. It is advisable not to run any other programs while it is busy flashing.
  6. After the flash you can hard reset it by entering this string into the keypad: *2767*3855#. Wait for it to finish.
  7. Re-insert your SIM and memory card after it has rebooted.
That's it. It should be working nicely now.

So all was going good with the upgrade. But now not anymore. The phone didnt restart for 1 week, but i then found out that the phone fails to recognise files on the phone and memory card. I go to music player and it just skips the files. I can see used storage and free space on both phone and mem card. Then if i restart the phone all works fine again.
2nd problem i found is that because of this the alarm fails to go off when im supposed to wake up. happened 4 times last week.
And on saturday I was out with friends, took phone out and saw the phone restarted again waiting on pin code and phone lock code. So all was useless. I dont even know if if warrenty is void. some sites claim if you did firmware upgrade the phone is out of warrenty.

Sorry to hear that.

I am having no issues whatsoever with the latest firmware, in fact I am very happy with it. The battery is definitely lasting much longer than before as well.

Will check to see if someone else is having the same issues and advise accordingly.

For starters, I would format the memory card before taking it out and reflashing the phone again.
