Not necessarily - if they can stop Apple sales they will need all of the facilities for their own production.

Apple are fairly new in the mobile market, and have far fewer patents than Nokia, Motorola, etc. They should be careful !

The first iPhone had horrible specs with zero 3G - yet they sold in the millions!

For sure, especially in light of the Oracle vs Google fight that should go to trial within the next two months. That case will change the landscape if Oracle were to win. Google's not showing signs of settling despite Oracle's position looking stronger by the day. Then we have Samsung vs Apple that will get real messy. What did Sammy do to tick Apple off like this? These two moved from good buddies to bitter enemies in no time. Wish some tech journo can write a scoop on the story behind the story.

Google did the same thing when they made Android. Apple and Google were close partners before that. They even had the same Schmidt on both boards.

Andriod is definitely inspired by the iPhone, but since the app store, Apple has really run out of ideas and others are catching up. I don't think Apple feels it can compete so it's getting more and more desperate to protect what little it has. Considering that Samsung is the giant in this fight, Apple must be careful (and with Google starting to gear up for 'war', I think apple is in a bad place).
 
Well, Apple tried the "attack is the best form of defense" strategy !

Trouble is, it does not always work (it only works if you have more patents).
 
From what I have read it seems that this whole Apple vs Samsung war started with a CPU

Samsung denied Apple prime access to the new A9 Exynos CPU's.

Apple's plans was to pay upfront for the factory as they normally do, in order to secure prime access to the CPU for use on the then planned iPhone 5's From the rumors it seems that Samsung was not happy with the deal as it would as normal exclude other competitors including its own mobile division access to the new cpu's.

I dont know if it was such a wise decision to deny the deal in order to build its own mobile market share but time will tell.

Oh and in case you wondering where they ended up, they being used in Tegra and more so in the new Nvidia Kal-El series.
