Hint: What you wrote could be misconstrued as that LED edge-lit LCD's supposed increase in brightness would help you see better when outside. Not true. LED edge-lit LCD's are only brighter when in virtually pitch black viewing conditions without any lights or ambient lighting. Perhaps rewrite your post as it's misleading. ;)

It could be, but I'm still to see. Okay, here I mean that LED us not of poorer quality of what I have seen so far. But I could be wrong. Then again, most LED monitors if not all I have seen so far, has a glossy finish. Which can be a strain on the eye with to much glare happening. The glossy finish is bad when looking at dark images with lots of glare on screen. (Try it out, you'll see) Some standard LCD's come with a matte screen that's not so bad on the eye. This bit is where I state that the matte finish I noticed on the ccfl Monitors we sometimes sell, does not glare as much as the glossy finish of most LED backlit monitors Where the LED makes up a little though is the brightness does help a bit. I can sit outside and browse with no major strain when setting my brightness to full. I actually can see better with my lappy that has a backlit (not edge lit) display, compared to my previous one. (i might have to add that the other lappy is 3 odd years old though so the CCFL's is probably losing it's touch)

I'm not saying the LED is better suited for outside lighting, but In my case, I have noticed the brighter lighting helping a little. (backlit LED remember? Not edge-lit. And not direct sunlight btw. I don't do sun. :p )

ps. I know all about the contrast ratio's that's measured in dark rooms and such, which is why I don't look at contrast ratio's when buying a monitor, I look at the monitor itself. :)

I guarantee you your average Joe would have interpreted it exactly as I explained. I still disagree with it being better in bright conditions. Probably just a newer screen than the comparative LCD. I doubt yours is back-lit LED. Back-lit LED LCD's are very expensive and are different to edge-lit LED LCD's (better picture quality, not as slim). 99% of PC LED-LCD's are edge-lit.

I sould say LED, don't be surprised if the very informed friends over here tell you to go for another brand :D...they tend to get carried away however very useful...

I must have edge-lit LED backlight(sorry I tried finding out what type my screen has but only kept finding Backlit LED, hence the above confusion. Apologies. :) )...But on 15" it's not too bad at all I think. ;) On the 24" tho, i'm sure it would be more noticeable.

Quick question though. Current large monitors, im sure they would have 2 ccfl's on either side at least? Not just one?

It can mean both in colloquial layman conversation, but LED edge-lit LCD TV's are edge-lit, not back-lit. Back-light technically implies a back-light, not edge-lighting. With the rise of edge-lit LED LCD's, we need to be able to make distinctions between either, hence the need to be technical.

So technically the TV would be full array RGB LED LCD with local dimming, for it to be called LED back-lit. LED back-lit and LED edge-lit are different techs.

Edge-lit implies lighting at the sides. Back-lit implies lighting at the back. Technically.

CCFL LCD's entire back-light is CCFL. They are not edge-lit.

CCFL LCD's entire back-light is CCFL. They are not edge-lit.

You do know what a CCFL looks like and stands for right? Cold Cathode Fluorescent LAMP. ie, smaller screens use one lamp, larger = more lamps. But not one big a$$ flat lamp.

To produce a complete television, the shutter assembly is combined with control electronics and backlight. The backlight for small sets can be provided by a single lamp using a diffuser or frosted mirror to spread out the light, but for larger displays a single lamp is not bright enough and the rear surface is instead covered with a number of separate lamps. Achieving even lighting over the front of an entire display remains a challenge, and bright and dark spots are not uncommon.

Edge-lit implies lighting at the sides. Back-lit implies lighting at the back. Technically.

Technically you're trying to be too technical. If the LCD didn't receive light from the back, be it spread via a frosted mirror from the side, as mentioned above, you won't see anything. Light straight from the sides with no help would also mean very poor visibility.

Anyway, I have better things to do than squabble over things like this.
 
So what's the backlight on the 'LCD' model then? Incandescent?!

Seeing as this monitor does not exist on google, if the prices are approximately the same, my guess is that the one just has better backlighting (more LEDs/different spacing/etc).

Well from the place where I'm looking it's about:

LCD: 1700
LED: 2100

So price isn't really the same..

But it's LED and LCD.. ?
 
No refresh. :) 2 is better than 5 though. The 2ms basically means how quick the monitor can draw a black image to white, and back to black again. So the lower the response time, the quicker this happens = winning!! :D

Agreed. If it's such a marginal increase in size, don't bother. The LED tech alone does not justify the expense.

My motto "only upgrade if it makes you go "wow I love this", not "oh this is nice". :)

ps. Standard LCD is backlit by CCFL, Cold Cathode Fluorecent tubes.

And there isn't really apoint in going from 23" to 23".. If you know what I mean?

Better back-lighting is arguable. Better in that it allows the screen to be slimmer and use slightly less power. Worse in that LED edge-lit LCD's are more prone to back-light bleed and uneven lighting.

Again, no picture quality difference.

So.. you're saying that the two monitor difference isn't really that greaT?

No point in upgrading?
 
2ms screens tend to be lower rated than 5ms screens.

Seriously, I'll echo what was said earlier: As long as it's under 8ms, you won't be able to tell a difference. It's purely marketing gimmick.

I call bs. LED edge-lit LCD's have higher dynamic contrasts ratios. Which basically means bugger-all. Basically you would only notice a difference under dark viewing conditions - not under normal viewing conditions where we have lights, ambient lighting, etc..

Again we see marketing gimmick. Higher dynamic ratio so the consumer thinks it's better or makes a difference.

Answer: profit!

The real-world difference between LED and CCFL-lit LCD screens is minimal at best.
The marketing people put their spin on everything, why? = Product diversification = move more product. (phase out old tech, manufacturer newer tech for less, charge similar price)
LED does consume less W, that's the biggest benefit I'd say, oh and the bezels are really thin, ..if you enjoy watching ur screen side-on! ;)

Me too. Just try and be more clear when comparing LCD and LED edge-lit LCD next time. Unless you like hoodwinking ignorant consumers. :)
