I'm sorry, people can have their new toys..they just mustn't be cooler than my new toys! :D

@v3g, maybe an idea for the team that tests all the handsets, to publish the testing status of the handsets online - just a simple page for each handset with possibile statuses like:
  • Waiting for manufacturer to deliver device
  • Device Testing Started on ccyy-mm-dd
  • Device Testing Failed on ccyy-mm-dd, number of serious problems detected: N
  • Device Testing Passed on ccyy-mm-dd
  • Waiting for manufacturer to fix N problems detected as of ccyy-mm-dd
IMO this would go a long way towards dispelling all the conspiracy theories that abound when there is a delay in the availability of a particular handset, and would be useful in helping customers to decide whether it is worthwhile waiting for a particular handset, or rather getting a different handset...:)

Thanks for the info V3G.

I think ic's suggestion is a good idea. This would definitely help us from checking every 2nd day with stores, and also bugging poor V3G.;) (not that he minds)

So what's the verdict? Is the zv50 as good as it looks? Will it comunicate via bluetooth 2 and breach the 384k mark? How's the batterly life when using 3G? does it have a good feel, or does it feel like the plastic toys Samsung usually releases?

Reason I ask is cause I'm seriously considering getting one.

ok thx BjornD :D

In my experience (Bluetooth, Nokia 6230, Laptop, GPRS) a data cable is definitely the best way to go.
No interference or latency issues between cell and laptop.

That's odd! I was told the complete opposite: Bluetooth is faster than whatever you can push through USB 2 cable .

I know bluetooth 1.1 has a theoretical max of just 720kbps, 2 is supposed to be MUCH faster... but no where near as fast as a USB 2 cable (which is even faster than firewire or even your standard CAT5 network I believe [480Mbits??? IIRC])

I'm really happy with the phone...not plasticy at all. Had the E700 before this and it feels like an empty piece of plastic compared to the ZV50. This thing is freaking packed!

Battery doesn't last very long running HSDPA, but i think thats why they give you 2 of them :)

I used a buddies cellink bluetooth v2 dongle (only about R150) and got 1.2 Mbps (only tried once), but reached 1.5Mbps via usb cable the day before.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

I'm between 2 minds, go for the HSDPA phone avaiable at the moment, the ZV50 (HSDPA) or wait for the N80 (3G) coming in 2 or so weeks time.
N80 is packed with features and arguably their best N-series phone.
what to do

BjornD, is there an option to turn HSDPA off when you are not using it? To save battery life of course.

zv50 settings?

to BjornD

i got myself the ZV50. i cant connect at HSDPA. only getting 30Kpbs at vodacom speed test http://vodacom.speed.co.za. BUT on the mobile-internet on the phone itself , i get 6062 Kpbs, hell thats 6Mbps. also at the same speed test site. i'm using the provided cd to connect via provided USB cable to laptop. Even connected via bluetooth dongle, but still only 30 Kbps. USB or Bluetooth, same speed. Normal browsing is fast. nothing to moun about. But why is the speedtest reporting 30Kbps. Are u also using the provided samsung-USB cable ?
U say u get 1.5Mbps , that means u can download 5M file in 3.2 secondes. Did u try it ? do u get that speeds ? Is there any settings maybe i should know about ? Port speeds are connected at 921Kbps or 640Kbps. Do i need another driver ? Could you help me ? Thanks

Can anyone tell me if there is an option on the ZV50 to turn HSDPA off when one is not using it? Please?

HSDPA/3G only connects when you request something. As soon as you close the vlive browser or the connection on your pc, it disconnects.

I have no idea why this might be happening, i was going to recommend setting the 'modems' maximum port speed to the highest value as it defaults to quite a slow one, but i see you have done that already. The only other thing i can think of is maybe the phone is not finding an HSDPA signal and using 3G..i have experienced this a couple times. Does the 3G icon have a '+' next to the 'G' ?

Regarding the 1.5Mbps, i was referring to 1.5 megabits per second. Divide that by 8 for the megabytes per second (so about .18 MB/s or 180kb/s).

Tough one...Nokias definately have a crapload of software features, so if thats what you like, you will be dissapointed with the ZV50. I on the other hand just wanted a phone to make calls, maybe take a couple pics and connect to the net (and be small in size), so the ZV50 is perfect for me. But i do have a couple friends that 'need' all these other apps and games etc...but one thing i have noticed about these symbian phones is: the more crap you load onto that thing the more buggy and slow it becomes...

I think you should wait it out till you can play around with both phones for a while and then decide...

So whats the battery life like when you not using HSDPA?

Its a toss up between the N80 and ZV50.

I have an HSDPA data card so the phone would just be backup.
