Hey guys,

Just purchased this phone and have successfully connected to HSDPA via bluetooth, but it seems windows does not have the correct driver for the modem via bluetooth, so its only allowing me to only connect at 384kbps (prob thinking its standard 3G).

I have scoured the net for this driver but can't find it anywhere (the damn samsung website doesn't even have this phone added yet :s ).

Anyone solved this problem?

Thanks

BjornD, are you using an HSDPA data bundle, or a vanilla-3G|GPRS data bundle, or the out of bundle R2/MB?

PS: Welcome to MyADSL :).

Hi IC,

I'm currently using the R2/mb but will be bundling from next month...

Thanks, good to be here :D

I just realised something..the dongle i was using is bluetooth v1.1, doesnt that limit to 4?? kbps?

Maybe i need to get myself a v2 dongle and try that?

Let us know how this phone works.
I looked at this phone but decided not to buy it, yet.
and yes, you probably should be using an USB 2.0 dongle

hhmmm... I only really check out the features it has and it doesn't look like it has a lot of features... compared to the Nokia N70 & N80, Samsung Z540, etc.
Basically, anything you can compare it to as well, from your experience and one can go further from there.
Battery life, signal reception / strength, voice quality, etc.

@v3g, if BjornD is using the out of bundle rate of R2/MB, then should BjornD not be allowed to get HSDPA speeds instead of being throttled to a maximum of 384kbits/s?

AFAIK Bluetooth 1.1 has a much higher speed threshold than 4kbits/s, I doubt that Bluetooth is the problem here - I suspect Vodacom is automatically [and dare I say incorrectly as well] throttling you since you're not using an HSDPA bundle...

o ye, I missed that.
USB 1.1 is definitely not 4kb:
USB 1.1 transfer rate up to 12Mbps
USB 2.0 transfer rate up to 480Mbps

It doesnt hurt using the latest technology though, to ensure your wireless connection is as fast as possible between cell and laptop / pc.
And of course BT thruput also plays a role...

ic:
Sorry about that, my 4??kbps meant somewhere in the 400-499 range, and i was referring to bluetooth bandwidth

eagle-slayor:
thanks, sounds like a plan, will try it out tonight.

lilDeath:
It doesnt have that many features to be honest (not if comapring it to the N70), but it has the things i need, plus then the HSDPA of course...

Reception seems very good, but the max volume on the speaker doesnt seem that high (actually going to take it in, cause i think it might be a fault with it).

The camera takes really good pics, but there is no flash :s

Also does not allow mp3's as message alert tone (only polyphonic)

I have only had it for a couple days so not too expert on everything, but i will post and bugs i find

I have stuck with samsung since my 5510, so wont be too great at comparing it to nokias..

ok thx BjornD :D

In my experience (Bluetooth, Nokia 6230, Laptop, GPRS) a data cable is definitely the best way to go.
No interference or latency issues between cell and laptop.

I don't think BjornD is being throttled to 384Kb/s.

I'd first check the actual throughput by eunning a few speed tests. It might just that the connection speed is reported as 384.

Also make sure that the phone did not fall back to 3G. Have not seen the phone to know the HSDPA indicator.

Lastly check the modem setup on the PC.

AFAIK, this phone is already 3.6Mb/s capable. By next year you'll be smiling.

Not 100% sure about this, but Bluetooth should support close to 721kbits/s...
AFAIK Bluetooth v1.1 has a theoretical max of 768kbits/s, but in reality I have never reached that, so it might be the bluetooth dongle that's causing the problem.

V3G I hope that the Z560 will also be 3.6Mb/s capable. By the way when are we expecting to see the Z560 in stores?

I was actually thinking of the 560 when I made the3.6Mb/s statement, apologies....:o

Need to check if the V50 can also do this.

The 560 is still in test, failed the first time around. I see we received new firmware last week, so it's back in test.

*gulp* i hope it can... :(

but now that i think about it, with the prices for HSDPA it's not like i'll be downloading large files anyhow...so for surfing, 1.8Mbps is more than i'll ever need! :D

really impressed with vodacom's coverage and speeds
