Sandy Bridge Upgrade

dont listen to these okes, buy the i5-2600k  doooo iiittttttt!!!

runs standard 3.3ghz but we all know they OC like something ridiculous. Im running 4.5ghz without changing anything else except my multiplier.

Runs standard at 3.4Ghz. ;)

But yeah, I agree, 775 is long gone. If you don't want to spend to much, look for a I7 920 (about R1200 2nd hand), Asus R2G (about R1k 2nd hand) and ram...

Thanks guys...

Honestly, I think the GD65 is great for what I need as well as the price I'm gettting it for...
If I upgrade my system will be as follows:

Aerocool Xpredator Black Edition case
Corsair GS600 PSU
Antec 620 Kuhler
MSI P67A-GD65
i5-2500K...probably running at 4.5Ghz...
Radeon 6950...flashed to 6970...

Not sure on RAM...Ripjaws X looks decent but because I look at the case everyday...huge window...the heatsinks are god ugly! So maybe Corsair Vengeance...4Gbx2 to start...

That will give me a decent machine for a good 18 months...then will look into SSD, SLI'ing another 6950...etc...

Don't listen to HTC_Guy, because he doesn't even know that the Core i5 2600k doesn't even exist :p

Just kidding...

If you're considering going for the i5 2500k route, then consider getting an MSI P67A-C43 motherboard for around ~R1100, unless you want to go for a SLI setup, in which case I would suggest the MSI-P67A-GD65.
Make 1000% sure that the RAM that you're getting for the Sandy Bridge setup is rated for 1.5V !

damn you guys... its a Friday gimme a break!! :D

You get my point though...

Care to elaborate on the 1.5v comment for the RAM? Not quite sure why you saying that

it depends on what your definition of "perfect" is. Everyone is different, everyone uses different settings and has min requirements in terms of FPS. read: personal preference

Personally, 775 doesnt cut it AT ALL for me... www.bottleneck.com :p

I run Witcher 2 maxed with no delayed loading. Most demanding game I have.

Let me know of a more demanding game to test? Crysis 2?

At this point I'd have to disagree with you. So do a few posters it seems. :)

@SharkBait: The i5 2500k runs at 3.3GHz, and the i7 2600k runs at 3.4GHz < at stock speeds with Turbo being off.

@HTC_guy: The Sandy Bridge memory controllers sits on the CPU's, so any memory voltage above 1.5V would put unnecessary strain on the CPU. Running RAM that was designed for 1.65V on a Sandy Bridge setup could very well damage your CPU over time.
This is why I would suggest that you make 1000% sure that the RAM that you buy to go with your Sandy Bridge setup is rated for 1.5V and not like 1.60 - 1.65V!

ATI 5850 with Q9550 is limited, fact. Brawler and Cerebus will back me up on that. FPS was directly effected when the CPU was overclocked.

Took that 5850 and put it with a AMD 965BE. Also limited. as the multiplier was increased, there was a noticible increase in FPS per 100mhz.

Im not gonna argue, saw the results first hand. If you okes wanna run gfx cards and then cripple them with slow ass cpu, be my guest :p

There is no argument. We are all advising to OC the high end 775 quad, so I'm not sure why you're going on about stock speeds.

well he has settled on a i-2500k

common sense prevails.

Common sense would only prevail if he intended using the PC for heavy tasks. Sure, get the i5 then as the difference would be far more noticeable than for gaming.

For gaming, common sense is as per 90% of the recommendations in this thread.

You're basically advising the oke to fork out for no reason, when the same/similar performance could be had from his current platform until Intel's new platform is released which will push down SB prices.

I guess the common sense 775 recommenders just care a little more.

CPU wise I'm going for the i5-2500k, no brainer really! Have a friend who works in the industry so can get the i5 for R1800 inc. VAT.

MOBO wise I'm looking at the MSI P67A-GD65. Performance the board is solid with a very decent feature set etc. Easily OC's i5 to 4.7Ghz, which I'm happy with. Paying R1450 inc. VAT

fact of the matter is, he has the money to upgrade.

if he had a budget of R1000 then sure, but he doesnt.

if you gonna start comparing a 4.5ghz i5-2500k to an OC'd Q9550 then you more confused than I thought

:p

Hey guys

Decided to take everyone's advice, keeping the Q9550 and found myself an Asus Maximus II Formula mobo.
Think I'm either gonna get a 23" monitor or just fork out for an LCD HD Tv to use as a monitor. Any suggestions?

Samsung LA32D550.

R3,300 - R3,500.

Much better value than 27" PC LCD. Much better panel = more colours, deeper blacks, larger viewing angles, etc.

Btw, branded 23" PC LCD = +-R2,500. Complete rip, and the panel is way inferior.

Google "LCD panel types Wiki". Samsung uses S-PVA.

Why don't you get a SSD which will overall boost your performance instead of wasting it on a screen.
