I went looking at some TV's todays, went into Hi-Fi Corporation and there was this HD ready 55" Sansui plasma TV for R9000. I wasn't even going to buy it as I'm unfamiliar with the brand and the quality (I was personally leaning on Sony, Samsung or Toshiba), but was told that there is a special coming up where they'll be offering the TV at the same price with a DStv HD PVR. Now I'm really considering it.

So what's everybody's take on Sansui, anyone own one?
Oh yes, what's the life expectancy on plasma's these days?

Edit: I forgot the product model but all I can recall it began with 'STY'

Rather go for the Samsung PS50C430 at about R8000. Cheaper and a much more reliable brand. One of their tried, tested and trusted plasmas, with many happy users on this forum.

I've heard Hifi Corp now owns the Sansui brand or something? Might have been just By: Dsign, or whatever else that cr*p is. Anyway, I've read many nightmares about Sansui. You get what you pay for, eventually.

You can put the R1000 saving towards the HD PVR. :)

don't touch sansui! I bought a sansui video / dvd player from hi corp and it became a 3 month nightmare - even a brand new unit hand delivered and opened in my house failed to work.

found out afterwards that the sansui brand was bought out and not the same as it was decades ago.

definately won't buy from hifi corp :(

Avoid Sansui. They're a rubbish brand and not even much cheaper than the decent stuff.

I would only consider the brand if it where half the price of the bigger brands. Its anyway just Byd:syn (whatever) branded products,

Spares for older models are impossible to find! as far as I'm aware in SA the brand is run by amalgamated appliances.

I own Sansui LCD (Full HD), not Plasma and its wonderful and has no problems - Paid R7999 at Hi Fi for 47inch. Also had a Sansui Home theater for many years with no problem. Similar zero problems with my 40inch By:Design LCD FullHD TV also bough from HiFi Corp. Got the By:Design for R4999.

HiFi corp used to be dodgy but is now part of the main stream JD group with much improved service and quality.

so - nearly three years on... anyone a Sansui TV that's happy?
I have (perhaps) an opportunity to buy one at a very big discount. Should I do it?

No, you can get a HiSense for the same price, with the difference being the HiSense has a 5 year warranty for peace of mind.

I...would...not...buy...Sansui

edit: Sinotec, not HiSense. For some reason I always confuse the two brands

AFAIK they're assembled here from imported parts (sansui I mean)

Sansui isn't a bad brand in the bigger scheme of things especially when it comes to Plasmas.

However you can't trust anything that HiFiCorp sells as being the real deal.

Why is sinotec any better?
Because if someone gives you two products - A and B - at the same price; A having a better reputation than B and then tells you he'll fix A should it break within the next 5 years...

Then you take A

So this potential purchase is directly from the factory (who I am sure supply hifi corp)

This will be much cheaper than regular sansui (and sinotec) pricing.

What sort of assurance are you getting from your supplier?

Do not do it. Sansui, like Nakachimi and a lot of other brands, are owned by a Korean group - I think their name is Elion Digital.
They bulk buy productions lines in China and then brand them in one of their owned brands.

Sansui is a Japanese brand, not Korean.

You are right though that it's the same company who owns Nakamichi and Akai but Nakamichi is also a highly regarded brand in and of itself so nothing wrong there.

EVERYONE uses Chinese production lines, so again nothing wrong with that either. You get good Chinese and you get bad Chinese.

Do your research (as with anything from any brand).

If you can't find reviews online then walk away because then it's not worth reviewing.

If you find positive reviews from multiple sources then go for it.

FYI Don't buy an HD Ready set at that price for that size. Presumably it's a mistake anyway since I bought my Full HD Samsung 51-inch for about the same price two years ago.

If a brand like Sony & Samsung are within a grand's reach of the same TV then I would say rather go for that than risk it, unless your research says others.

If you can't find anything when researching...then don't do it.

Ellion also owns Wharfedale and a number of others. Sansui as a entity does not exist. Its a Shell Company owned for branding purposes.
