If one wants to pursue a career in a SAP direction, what is the best certification to start with which should be able to provide the proverbial foot in the door?!?

Start by figuring out what that actually means for you: functional analysis, technical integration, ABAP programming, project management, support, etc. It also depends on what basis you have at the moment. I would suggest your try to get into a "reputable" SAP consultancy where you get on the job exposure. The certifications will follow from there.
