SAPS complaint against DA ad upheld

Bleh

They should not re-edit it, but just bleep out the "offending" words and splash big "censored" squares across the advert.

Perhaps SAPs should be worried about their own police officers shooting (poorly) at civilians point blank more than those bringing this to the publics attention?

“The election period tends to bring about a lot of volatility. The police should not be seen as a threat to the community,” chairman of Icasa’s complaints and compliance committee Wandile Tutani said in Johannesburg.
Uhm...the picture kind of proves that they are.

If it were a stage scene falsely portraying the police in a negative light then I'd see how everyone would be loosing their sht...but this is an actual real life photo of SAPS shooting unarmed civilians at point blank range....and now another government entity is censoring it.

Pity...this uncensored democracy thing was fun while it lasted.

whichever side you're on, whatever your views are, that picture just shouts about so many issues.
big, fat, cop shooting at unarmed civvies at close range. where was the threat, why would a sjambok not be better for this situation (if needed at all), was he too fat and lazy to run closer and disarm whatever threat he perceived to be? Of course I wasnt there at that moment, can't see a bigger picture of what may have been around. But i can't see the need for his actions. to me this just looks like a cop out of control, bad training and bad management
the ANC still keeps blaming apartheid and apartheid's cops, so why are they so bent on making the same mistakes.... 20 years on
i guess, lets not make the error of thinking this can't and doesn't happen in the best of governments, and the best of police depts... but as the DA is trying to point out, this is getting out of hand, and the responsibility has to land with bad police minister and president.
so lets be allowed to call a spade a spade

at the end of the day, SABC and cops want to ban the ad? go ahead... its already gone beyond TV... its reaching many more people over the internet, try and stop that

This is interesting. I didn't know that Icasa had power to regulate what people put on YouTube. I would tell Icasa to fsck off and try remove something siting on a server somewhere in the US. Afaik the Internet is open ground and whatever problem that arose should be dealt with directly with the content creator and not involve some regulatory body that will prove censorship and fsck it up somehow.

That image definitely looks shopped!

This is what a fire from a shotgun looks like:

This little puff of fake looking smoke is definitely not a shotgun discharge, and where are the rubber bullets striking those individuals?

That dude on the left looks like he is having a great time! What fun to shoot human beings.
The last time I said that to a cop I was detained for 24 hours.

Not all riot control weaponry is the same. Timing also makes a difference.
But I wouldn't put it past this SA cop to totally miss his target.

It just looks too impossible - not all riot control weaponry is the same, I agree - but the gunpowder discharge would be greater than the poor attempt at screen overlaying that's showed in that image.

Maybe it's real, who knows...

a photo of a police officer shooting rubber bullets

It has been a while but that is a shotgun which takes shotgun rounds filled with pellets.

DA-ad.jpg

Rubber bullets used to be much larger than shotgun rounds and required a special rubber bullet "gun".

It is the unlawful shoot first ask no questions later behaviour and attitude of cANCer-controlled police officers that forces people fear the police.

I'll put my money that the shot was fired around the corner but i don't think that lady would have been hearing too lekker for a while.

Is that a DA t-shirt that the victim of police brutality is wearing?

That shotgun is aimed at her head and even if the shotgun round did not contain pellets, the apparent proximity based on the blast pattern would have caused powder burns on her face.

The DA should lodge an appeal with the ICASA's CCC and this time call on the police complaints directorate to share their findings in that particular incident as well as other incidents where the police have overstepped the line, then show some footage of the police commissioner telling lies at the Marikana Commission.

The police haven't disputed the validity of the picture and the DA confirmed it was authentic at the hearing. That's not the issue.

The issue was the context of the picture. Unfortunately the article doesn't mention where the context could have misled someone looking at that picture - it seems clear to me

I would agree if the policeman committing the crime of police brutality was contextually waving a cANCer party flag in the faces of his victims, otherwise it is not clear to me what you mean by context.
