SARS E-Filing 2015

Calculation says I got a refund and next thing.. boom.. notification saying my non taxable travel allowance is higher than allowable amount.

How sad...

Your travel allowance coded under non-taxable travel allowance on your IRP5 is more than R26 400? You are limited to 8 000km at a rate of R3,30 as non taxable. Anything above that is taxable (either the rate or the km's).

Odd, against 3703 I only have R18k odd.

Howcome you guys received payment so quick?
I did my return on 1 July.
Due to receive over R36k back. No mention of being audited or submission of supporting docs.
Hopefully tomorrow will get cash.

Anyone know how to calculate the medical aid portion of your total SARS rebate?
Sites I googled are a bit confusing.

Quick question.
How do I verify that the values on all these IT3(b/c) certificates which banking/investment institutions sent me correspond with the values on SARS? Do I have the ability to verify these?

The interesting thing for me is that one gets a fixed Medical Aid credit per person per month back, not a percentage of your medical premium back (like I'd have assumed). I saw on SARS' website that it's meant to be R270/person/month (for primary person and first dependent), but in reality it seems a little lower because I got a bit less back than expected.

This implies that people on cheaper medical insurance plans/hospital plans technically benefit more than people on more expensive plans, purely from a 'percentage back' point of view. In fact, you could end up getting 50% of your year's hospital plan premiums back, purely from this tax credit, right?

Correct, it's the new medical tax credits that came into effect I think 2 or 3 years ago. In the past, rich people on expensive plans scored the most, if you were in the max tax bracket 40% (at that stage), and you had expensive medical aid, you would have received the 40% back that you paid in tax on the amounts that went to the medical aid, so you got a lot more back and your expensive plan cost you less - this is my understanding, someone else here might know more, but that's what it comes down to.

The majority of people did not get anything or only small amounts back on their cheap plans, so they switched it around, now the rich people get only the said R270 back instead of maybe a thousand per month (depending on your medical expenses) and the majority also get the R270, even if they are on a cheap plan, it's basically taking from the rich and giving to the poor.

The reason why I opposed this from the beginning is this has now caused medical aid providers to carry the medical costs and raise plan prices for everyone, because even though some people are on the cheapest plan, they still get the R270 back, so the medical aid has less and less money to try and cover the prescribed minimum benefits for those members on those plans (yet still have to provide a cheap plan) so the prices go up more and more, it get's more difficult for them to provide a cheap plan with the minimum benefits. But just my 2 cents :D

So you've checked that you have a 'N' next to your Audit Docs Required on your IT34?

Yesterday was 1 July. Not exactly time to panic yet, 24 hours or less later.

I only received mine on the 10th last year.

I think my calculator is broken. I have added about 900km for the use of hired car for official use to my return and my balance still shows R0.

Isn't the calc something like the first odd thousand kms is deemed private, then the next few odd thousand business (tax deductable) and then the rest private again? If so, 900km might not make the cut....
