Calculation says I got a refund and next thing.. boom.. notification saying my non taxable travel allowance is higher than allowable amount.
How sad...
Your travel allowance coded under non-taxable travel allowance on your IRP5 is more than R26 400? You are limited to 8 000km at a rate of R3,30 as non taxable. Anything above that is taxable (either the rate or the km's).
The interesting thing for me is that one gets a fixed Medical Aid credit per person per month back, not a percentage of your medical premium back (like I'd have assumed). I saw on SARS' website that it's meant to be R270/person/month (for primary person and first dependent), but in reality it seems a little lower because I got a bit less back than expected.
This implies that people on cheaper medical insurance plans/hospital plans technically benefit more than people on more expensive plans, purely from a 'percentage back' point of view. In fact, you could end up getting 50% of your year's hospital plan premiums back, purely from this tax credit, right?
Howcome you guys received payment so quick?
I did my return on 1 July.
Due to receive over R36k back. No mention of being audited or submission of supporting docs.
Hopefully tomorrow will get cash.

I think my calculator is broken. I have added about 900km for the use of hired car for official use to my return and my balance still shows R0.
Isn't the calc something like the first odd thousand kms is deemed private, then the next few odd thousand business (tax deductable) and then the rest private again? If so, 900km might not make the cut....
