SARS E-Filing 2015

You can only claim what happened in the tax year that it happened in.
So for 2013 med aid stuff, you had to claim those in the 2013 tax year.
Sars gets really sticky when it comes to dates of claims... my donations article 18a document last year didnt have printed on it that it was for the period Mar 2013 to Feb 2014 and was subsequently rejected. Had to ask for a new detailed document from the Childrens home.

ok thanks

E-filed on Monday and got selected for assessment. I filed all the documentation on the same day. Usually they pay by the next morning, but it's Wednesday and I'm still waiting.

Pay back the money! Pay back the money already!

Assessment can take up to 30 days AFAIR. You also need to wait for the to issue a letter saying the assessment is complete and if they had to change anything on your return.

Did they change their policy? In the past it was completed within a matter of hours and the refund would be in my account the very next morning.

Wonderful, so I call SARS to ask when I will receive my refund and they tell me I have outstanding tax returns for 2011 and 2012. I did not work in 2011 at all, so I have NO clue how I could have outstanding returns for that year. This might become a nightmare to deal with.

Hi all,

Read earlier somewhere in this thread that if you earn sub R350k you don't have to submit, is that true?

True with lots of but X and Y, safer to just submit.

Top tip: You don't need to file if your total salary for the year before tax is not more than R350 000, provided:

* You only have one employer (but remember if you have two employers you do need to file however little you have earned)
* You have no car allowance or other income (e.g. interest or rent)
* You are not claiming tax related deductions (e.g. medical expenses, retirement, travel)
* You received interest from a source in South Africa not exceeding -
o R23 800 if you are below the age of 65 years; or
o R34 500 if you aged 65 years or older.
* Dividends were paid to you and you were a non-resident during the 2015 year of assessment.

I have to pay in R0.01

Same here :(

I should probably start getting more educated about how this tax thing works :P
All I know is that I pay more in tax than many people earn and now still ended up owing them 1c.

My Fiancee owes SARS over R1k and she earns a third of what I do

I'll be honest and say that I didn't read through this whole post; and yes I probably am the laziest sob on the planet.

I have a simple question that someone with some inside knowledge might know.

I'm still a student, and part time I coach at a school. They deduct 25% as freelance tax. I have my IRP5 for 2015 which I then submitted at a sars branch. The lady notified me that I have unsubmitted IRP5s from 2013&14 (I never knew that there was tax being deducted from my salary so never bothered to ask for IRP5/payslip or anything - thought it was a pettycash type of payment as I only coach for n few months). Anyway, found out i can do the whole sars thing even though I am paid peanuts and get my 25% back, which for a student is a lot of peanuts...

She then processed all 3 of the IRP5s, said i should come back bring in 2013&14 IRP5 for scanning. Printed me a Statement of Account indicating all the peanuts i have to be refunded and it's all smiles.

My question is, after she added the 13&14 IRPS my "Selected for auditing" changed from a No to a Yes...
So...
1. How long does this take?
2. Why would they select me (they can see I'm fulltime student and I get paid very little)?
3. Is there anything I should do from my side (I submitted those other IRP5s; I don't have medical aid or anything like that, I live off of pocket money)?
4. When audit is complete, how long before my refund? (so i can keep off the 2minute noodles for a change)

Appreciate any feedback!

Still waiting for my refund :erm:

I'm also still waiting. I sent them an email yesterday to hear what's going on. The automatic reply I got was that it may take up to 3 weeks to get a reply to my email. So it looks like I just have to wait.

Wonder if that is 3 work weeks - or just 21 days...

It is coming up for 21 days since I filed and submitted all supporting docs.

Maybe I must give them a call on Monday.

Submitted on the 8th. Had to submit documents, uploaded also on the 8th, still waiting. Phoned them, all I got was "we are busy".
