Pretoria - South Africa collected R674.2bn in revenue in the fiscal year ended March 31, slightly more than a target of R672.2bn, Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan said on Friday.

"The remarkable performance that Sars (the South African Revenue Service) is reporting indicates that our economy is recovering," Gordhan said. He added the fiscal deficit for 2010/11 is likely to be 5.0% of gross domestic product (GDP), lower than the previous forecast of 5.3%.

The only government department that is able to meet and exceed targets is the one that collects cash from us.

How about a bigger tax break next time, Gordhan?

My dad continues to be bullied by the tax man every year. He claims all his retirement annuities and medical payments (as a pensioner), and every year SARS makes the same "mistake" on his submission telling him that he owes them a hundred grand instead of the other way around. My dad has paid tax faithfully all his life... often more tax than he needed to pay. But now, year after year we are getting the distinct feeling that he is being bullied into paying and not claiming for any other deductions since every year he has to lodge a dispute, get audited, go to their offices to report to some snot nosed juvenile who can't wait to get back to his ping pong game. We have lost count of the number of times he has rocked up there with piles and piles of documents only to be told that the brat he is to meet is "on training" in Pretoria. Probably training on how to bully faithful tax payers into paying even more tax. So yeah... SARS is good at getting the cash in... but it comes at a steep price. :(

I would love to know if they are as hard nosed with certain other "non-paying" groups?

Yea! So about fixing the darn roads, traffic lights, subsidse fuel prices, increase police force! Etc!
Don't brag about it PG, or crooks from parliment will want to get their dirty, thieving paws on it!

More fuel for the gravy train.

Wasn't the budget like R900bn? If we collecting only R600 odd, that doesn't look too good?

Um, what utter nonsense, Gordhan. The fact that this agency can extract more money from the economy is in no way indicative that the economy is actually improving, rather it is sadly indicative that SARS is becoming more efficient at stealing.

@Garyvdh

It's unfortunate that your father was under the impression he would be treated like a "customer" by the government. From the sounds of it he's a cash cow for them so it's not like they'd treat him any differently. Their job is to make their "thievery target", one way or another.

Oh, trust me... he has never been under that impression. When you see SARS make the same "mistake" on both yours and your wife's returns, then you know that the mistake was intentional, possibly even malicious (in the sense that they call you everyday after that to tell you to pay and threaten you).

Returns are assessed on face value. If there is some mistake on the original assessment it is 99.9% of the time the taxpayer's mistake.

When is demographic representation going to happen with SARS? ;)

Our government is so keen for it in every other area.

I know way too many people of all races operating in ways to avoid having to pay :(

Why the :( face? These folks are heroes.

You mean, you don't understand what will happen to our country long term, if the tax revenue doesn't grow and the paying base doesn't become more representative?

rubbish - it's a known fact that there is sometimes a glitch in the SARS program and can be the mistake on SARS' part. if all the data is entered correctly on e-filing by the taxpayer then there is no reason why the assessment should be incorrect.

Someone already mentioned in this thread that the budget shortfall versus tax income is in the hundreds of billions of rands. Clearly the government doesn't care whether they steal their cash from citizens or borrow it against them, either way they get what they want.

Let's take your assertion to its logical conclusion: why not have taxation at 100% of income?

Now let me then pose my own question on the other end of this spectrum: imagine if there were no taxes. You pay no VAT, no payroll tax, no income tax, no tax on fuel, no tax on imports, no capital gains. Nothing. How much wealthier would you, and everybody else, be? How much cheaper would petrol, consumer goods, industrial goods and everything else be? How much more capital would there be available to start new businesses and employ people? Bleh, but why would we want more of that stuff anyways, right?

Hence the taxpayer did not enter it correctly. I see it multiple times every day. There are problems where there is human involvement but that happens after assessment.

No taxes = no roads, water, electricity, Telkom, defense force, Police, hospitals, etc.

I have no respect for SARS - they don't even answer queries, just a bunch of sh*theads !

Well so far in our area: "no telkom lines - redistribution to pdi; poor, pot holed, roads; police rarely if ever turns up on complaints, only hospital is about 20kms (been there once, not a single doc on duty for emergency)

But! Wait, we pay taxes & poor to no returns from Guvamunt!
