I am amazed that you have support documentation going back 2006.
I didnt... Told the assistant this as well... So she worked out my return based on what i had submitted the year before... Didnt argue... SARS then owed me R350 odd... She submited it... Was then sent for audit... Was approved same day and after my 2019 return was submitted i paid them what was owed and finally saw the end of saturday night SMS's and emails from SARS...

Had to sort out a return from 2006 the other day... Lady helping me said they have gone as far back as the 90's....
I had a similar experience had to go back to a bank I no longer bank with to get statements. They charged me quite a bit for my old statements. SARS has this tendency to annoy the **** out of honest tax paying citizens.

guys, declare all your income that SARS wouldn't know about if you dont declare. its the right thing to do.

So, it seems that 5 year date counts to nothing in certain cases. My word.

It never has, that is a complete fallacy. They can basically make up any reason to go further back than 5 years and there's nothing you can do about it because for some odd reason the burden of proof is on the taxpayer to prove their innocence. So SARS can allege anything they want and it's up to you to prove otherwise. The only time the burden of proof shifts to SARS is when they pursue criminal charges against you, in which case the usual innocent until proven guilty stuff applies.

Ok SARS - start at Luthuli House and Pala Pala - thank me later

In recent years SARS has become very aggressive, and are targeting the wrong people. They're aggressive to people who pay their taxes and file their returns, yet still, today, ignore people who are in the media for flaunting their wealth of dodgy dealings, yet they're left alone. Untouchable because they're connected to the ANC.

They're using AI to go through historical bank records. My guess is that they probably looking at all the incoming deposits into people's bank accounts, checking how much they vary with the declared income for the relevant tax year, and if it varies more than a certain threshold they automatically reopen your tax return for that tax year and you must please explain. That's probably why people are getting random requests to provide more information for historical tax returns.

in recent years? what you are describing has been going on for decades. just as an example.......people who scored major cash and cars and other forms of bribes well documented during the arms deal. sars could have easily investigated people's unexplainable wealth. nothing.

I meant, lately they're going on the common man (often compliant) taxpayers

Yeah, they're desperate. They sent me a nice letter requesting an audit on my entire crypto dealings... ja well no fine, but now they can't tell me what exactly they need for this.
