Sars reveals increase in tax returns

despite an increase in the threshold for submitting a return from R120,000 to R250,000
This irks me. In other countries like Australia everyone is registered for tax. Now SA doubles the low threshold. Let those guys suffer like we had to suffer when we were earning that.

One less taxpayer now as the wife is unemployed.

OT question, if you are registered for tax and are unemployed, do you still have to submit a return? Is there a way of getting the process stopped?

AFAIk there is a form you need to fill in if you want to deregister

I used to complain about Tax. I am human I still do but not as much as I used to. It changed one weekend after I visited Zim. To be fair there are parts of that country where you forget where you are. But I could not escape the crumbling/crumbled infrastructure en-route to my destination.
As soon as I cleared the border coming back home, Ignoring the other stuff that goes on in this country for a moment, those 'cheesy' `Thank You` SARS ads that are prominent with each end of the filing season did not seem to 'cheesy' too me anymore.

Just a thought.

If she doesn't earn anything like investment or wants tax deductions then she can skip it @ 250 threshold. I wouldn't bother trying to deregister...sounds painful.

You get the same effect in europe though to a lesser degree.

tbh I think 99% of South Africans support paying tax to support the country...its just things like nkandla paid for by taxpayer coin where people start thinking in terms of expletives.

So anything under 250pa and you don't need to do anything?

That's pretty high

Now it will exclude all those brainless government employees who don't know or are too lazy to do tax returns

The R250k threshold is only applicable if you do not earn an income from multiple sources and/or have no other allowable deduction. The only one benefitting from not submitting is SARS as the will not pay out a refund if you entitled to one. I have yet to come across a taxpayer that earns more than R20k per month that does not have some sort of allowable deductions such as medical aid or RAs.

The only way to try and legally reduce your tax liability is submit an income tax return and claim any and all allowable deductions.

If under 250k *and* your PAYE covers all your income *and* you don't need to claim deductions then you're good.

Realistically everyone earning something reasonable is going to fall outside of that group though.

They still register and pay tax, they just don't need to file a return.

Which is stupid on their part if they have any deductibles like RA's and Medical Aid.

Correct. Every employee must have a tax number. Employers cannot submit EMP501 recons without it. Penalties will be implemented but currently SARS simply issues the employer with an income tax number and the employer is notified via the easyfile program.

The only reason the threshold was increased is to benefit SARS. The same with turnover tax, to convince taxpayers that SARS is making it easier for them.
