SA's cellular tariff maze

Vodacom's default prepaid plan, called 'vodacom4less' is actually the most expensive.
i wonder how much money they make of charging unsuspecting customers unnecessarily high rates... it makes me a little sick to the stomach, especially it's mainly the people who can least afford it

It's no use saying that it's confusing (we all know that) and then doing nothing about it.

Cell C uses the best model for structuring tariffs, and a standard should be set around it.

I get R85 Cell C airtime per month on my Sim from Edgars at a significant discount.
The catch is, I'm not allowed (or able) to switch to the "99c for Real" tarriff plan.
Are they allowed to do this?

I contacted CellC support about this and they say they can't help me since Edgars
is my service provider.

I have no idea who to contact at Edgars to find out more about this, since they
don't have an airtime division.

As meritorious as these presentations might be, nothing will happen in the foreseeable future.

I dont know if its worth it if you could switch.

I wanted to move from a easychat 100 to the 99c Straight Up plan. I may migrate, but is will cost me the current R145/m (in my case R1700 odd divided by months leftover on the contract) plus the R100/m for the new contract.

The funny thing is that i still have to pay for the old contract but loose all the free time, sms ect, but get the new contract.

Come on CellC do you really think i am that stupid?

Why anyone on prepaid would opt for anything but Cell C's 99c For Real option is beyond me. Maybe I'm too dof after the weekend to understand it!

Cell C's 99 for Real is the only Real Value for Money for anyone on Prepaid - coverage is good in urban areas, seems to roam in rural- it often would choose 2G when a 3G connection is available - so used to force it to choose 3G.

Go get a Cell C sim now!

I've just moved to Cell C, they are great! Not any worse that VC for call quality and the internet side is actually much better!

i am also browsing with cell c and making calls any time, am a new new member too.

My experience is exactly the same. Cell C had a patcy network in the beginning but they have since invested heavily in the 900Mhz spectrum. I get HSDPA almost all the times, even in areas where Vodacom and MTN only get GPRS. They are also a third cheaper with their data bundles and airtime. This is not a marginal difference, this is significant. I never thought that I would be a Cell C supporter but I have not looked back since I joined them. (I moved 5 contracts). For the first time I can actually make phone calls during the day without feeling guilty about the costs. I fail to understand why anyone in their right mind would deal with Vodacom and MTN's and their exorbitant rates.

Interconnect rates are also keeping these call rates artificially high. I understand that these rates were implemented to allow new entrants into the market to compete effectively, but they are having a detrimental impact on the cost of calls. Lower interconnect rates are not being passed onto consumers. Hopefully Cell C can continue to lead the pack and pass 1 March's interconnect rate cut drop onto their customers.
