The R75m national demonstration project in Darling in the Western Cape is the first "green energy" initiative in the country to produce electricity from wind power on a commercial basis.

SA's first wind farm ... some good news for a change. Let's hope they build more...
 
As great as this is, as positive as I want to be, I just cannot.
BTech has it. It will be destroyed.
 
I hope not, truly. We need more-more-more of these up and running!
 
The "farm" will be siezed and given to the "underpriveleged" to "farm". :D

having no "farming" skills they will be extravagantly unable to "grow" anymore Wind Turbines! :p
 
I've just had some baked beans on toast, so the second wind farm is about to go live! Hold on to your hats!!!
 
ANy idea of how many windmill things on this farm? Probably not more than 5.
 
It has all of 4 on it.. :)

but its 5.2MW worth

so with all the money that is being thrown at electricity grid expansion now... why are they not building more of these?

Even private firms should be jumping on this band wagon!!! :confused:

I agree! Four turbines is pathetic but at least it is a start :)

Wind is delivered for free. Therefore, no BEE contracts to hand out.
 
Sounds great :).

I think there are not a lot of wind farms in SA because there are not many places in SA where wind blows enough to create power.

Moederloos: Surely they can hand out BEE contracts for the construction of the wind turbines?
 
Why dont we have huge solar panel farms? That would work much better here in SA
 
Saw it last weekend. Four 'mills. One was turning.

Remember, it only generates full capacity when it's spinning at max. Half wind = half output (OK, it's probably not linear).

I'd love to see a non-cooked report on exactly how much power one of those 'mills deliver in one contiguous 356 day 24 hour period. Then divide that by 356 and 24, to get the true capacity.

I think mainly because they cost a few billion R for a hundred or so MW. They're building/planning one near Upington AFAIK but I remember the R/MW being really scary...

The biggest problem with solar and wind energy is the non-continuous supply of energy...less power on cloudy/overcast and windless days.
