SA's most-liked printer brands

Canon and HP are the favourite printer brands among South African IT professionals and executives.

Many may consider printers to be ancient pieces of technology that have been replaced by the paperless working environment. However, several businesses and processes still rely on a physical paper trail.

Replaced my POS HP last year with a Brother. Best decision ever. No more resetting and rebooting every time I want to print more than one document. Sad thing was, the printer was decent, but HP bloat ware drivers absolutely suck.

Edit: I forgot about the irritating random "print head can't move" error. Just avoid HP period

Are you sure that HP printers are not a favorite of procurement departments rather than IT professionals?

I’ll only buy Brother and Epson.

Epson for inkjet and Brother for Laser.

they have the least crap software.

Honestly if you have kids in school you're going to need a printer. We print a lot of stuff on our old HP Officejet 8600.

The wife is a teacher too, so she also prints a lot.

Have had our fair share of driver issues and their ink is bloody insanely expensive, but drivers are stable now and I've found a couple of third party ink cartridges that seems decent, so we're happy for now.

Im not to fussed about brand names per se, but you get use to a certain set of features on a home MFP, very quickly.

To me they must have the below min specs.
Network printing ethernet port rather than wifi
Scanner
Scan to email
Duplex printing and scanning.

Also had a few of these. Kak printers.

After this, we moved to HP. We were printing a fsck ton once upon a time. So glad those days are over.

Used to order 30-40 toners at a time. Refurbed/refilled toners. Never used originals. When a new printer came out and we adopted it. We used to buy a few new ones just to get the refurb ball rolling with our toner suppliers.

I had an HP Laser. In 4 years my cartridges went from R500 per individual colour toner to R2000 a toner.

So I ditched it and went back to Epson (bought a Ecotank) and honestly I love it. It works extremely well.

Last time I bought a generic toner it refused to work. It seems HP likes to now block printers who doesnt use HP toners (with the comment its to protect you the client - rubbish).

I believed there were people who rented HP, and when they cancelled the rental/maintenance agreements, the printers were turned to bricks by HP remotely.

So yip Epson is best.

Unless you had an HP Laserjet 4000N. Those old big relics just print and print and print and print.
