South African online gamblers warned

Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies has warned offshore gambling operators that setting up businesses in the country would not force his department to introduce forms of gambling which were deemed illegal here.

I know someone who won R1.something million on piggs peak about three weeks ago. She got her money a day or two later.

From the piggs peak website :

Hi there

Further to our previous correspondence in August 2010 regarding Casino Enterprises T/A Piggs Peak Casino’s court case ruling for which we were granted leave to appeal, we’d like to inform you that we will be heard in the Appeal Court in Bloemfontein on 23 August 2011. We should have the final judgment shortly thereafter, at least within a few weeks. This judgment will determine the legality of online gambling for South African residents.

We are hoping to win the appeal in which case South African Residents will legally be able to continue playing on our internet Casino. There are no Foreign Exchange Contraventions as Swaziland is part of the Common Monetary Area. (South Africa, Swaziland, Lesotho & Namibia)

Should the appeal be unsuccessful we will unfortunately have to stop taking bets from people residing in South Africa, and we will ensure that all players are notified and given adequate time to access the banking modules and redeem all remaining balances due to them.

Regards,

Piggs Peak Casino Swaziland

If you want to gamble use payoneer cards or Neteller card then they will not beable to monitor you and you will get your money

So if i were to win the R1.3bn in the euromillions lottery on friday then i wont be allowed to bring it into SA? Not that I would bring it here anyway, but just out of interest.

I dont understand why its the governments choice if we gamble online or not?
whats it to them if some idiot doesn't know when to stop?

I dont know really why they do it....but atleast it cant be for money. They would collect more tax if its allowed. And it cant be on moral grounds to help people....cause they are the ANC, so it must have been accidental.

Because it hurts the people around them. Gambling's the biggest social problem in Australia. Sometimes, people need to be protected from their own stupidity, which is why drinking and driving is illegal. Laws that curb some kind of addiction/vice usually arent to punish the individual, they're to try and limit the fall-out on society as they ruin their lives.

They not preventing your choice to gamble. Can always go to your nearest Sun International Casino. How i see it is, for instance, Piggs Peak is not a South African business therefore does not have to pay tax's or whatever for operating a casino.

That's just my thought

There is a social impact to gambling.
There are tax revenue issues.
There are currency issues.
There are ethics and regulatory issues.
Etc. etc.

Well, EuroMillions doesn't operate in SA. As long as you're a European Citizen/Resident, then you can enter

No I think you are wrong - I know of people who reside in SA and are SA citizens who enter and have won all be it not the jackpot. They will put the winnings in any account in virtually any country.

Stupid government - it is all about their greed, they want to stop online gaming, so that people would rather buy lottery and lotto tickets. Stuff them, if they can disallow online gaming, then they must close down the lotto and lottery system. If I have worked hard for my money - AND ALREADY PAID MY TAXES ON THE MONEY EARNED, then I should darn well be entitled to spend my after-tax money any way I want to.

if i won they eurolotto i won't mind much(little as possible) paying capital gains tax or something like that(the gov gets there slice then), other than that i wouldn't bring much of money into the country anyway.

Spot on - it's about the money, when it comes to money and tax, it's always about the revenue for the fiscus

Not necessarily. If this were the case they'd want to open up as many avenues of gambling as they could and not restrict licensing. The reason licensing is so restrictive is because the government regulators and the gambling industry are interwoven. The government's actions are simply to limit the potential for competition against the status quo.

How is This still illegal? I tend to loose all my money, including transport money so if I gamble at home I avoid that.

I'm glad its Illegal. Last year i lost all my bread and smoke money online. At least when i go to montes I only take what i want to play.

Oh ffs - all you had was money for bread and smokes and you went gambling with that money? Well this is exactly why these laws are ridiculous - they blanket-ban certain activities because of the likes of you and your fellow grey-matter inhibited twits. Understand this - YOU need to take responsibility for YOUR money. YOU need to determine how YOU spend it. If YOU choose to gamble that money away, don't go moaning about it when it's lost...

Wrong Gary, there are 6 Casino's within driving distance of me. The question is why ONLINE gambling, and the obvious answer is the ANC doesn't get its tax when i deposit money into PKR or Piggs, and I can leave my winnings there should I choose to.

The issues you allude to are symptoms of gambling in general.
