Proteas return to London for CSA's big day

London - Monday is set to be a significant day in the history of South African cricket as the newly-formed Global T20 League takes centre stage.

While the tournament only gets underway for the first time in November, with the final penciled in for December 16, a function in London on Monday will see Cricket South Africa (CSA) announce the new franchise owners for the eight city-based teams that will take part in the competition.

With the bidding and tendering process now complete, who the new franchise owners are and where they come from will be of greatest interest.

Already, Kolkata Knight Riders owner Shah Rukh Khan has been heavily linked with a franchise as well as the ownership of the Delhi Daredevils.

Given the desired international investment that the tournament is seeking, it will be interesting to note how many of the teams are South Africa-owned and exactly where they will be based.

CSA has also confirmed that Monday's launch will see their eight marquee Proteas players - Hashim Amla, Quinton de Kock, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Faf du Plessis, David Miller, Kagiso Rabada and Imran Tahir - all allocated a team owner and franchise.

A number of those Proteas returned home following South Africa's exit from the ICC Champions Trophy, but Sport24 spotted Amla, Du Plessis, Duminy and De Kock all returning to London when they landed at Heathrow Airport together on Sunday morning.

All of those players are expected to take part in the four-match Test series against England that begins at Lord's on July 6, but none of them will play in the upcoming three-match T20 series.

Some of the eight international marquee players - Dwayne Bravo, Chris Gayle, Lasith Malinga, Brendon McCullum, Eoin Morgan, Kevin Pietersen, Kieron Pollard, Jason Roy - are also expected to attend the launch.

CSA has also seemingly invited a number of other high-profile South Africa names, including a number of former Proteas.

They are expected to serve as ambassadors for their respective cities.

LONDON - Cricket South Africa (CSA) today officially announced the successful eight Team Owners who, in a clear vote of confidence in South Africa’s new T20 Global League, have earned the right to be part of cricketing history.

After much anticipation and with excitement at an all-time high, the reveal took place at a well-attended industry launch event at London’s most prestigious hotel, The Bvlgari, London. The event set the tone for a new standard in T20 cricket.

EY (previously known as Ernst & Young) ran the team owner selection process to ensure integrity, compliance and due diligence was followed throughout the process by both CSA and potential owners.

“Competition was stiff, with more than 150 Expressions of Interest (EOI) received from around the world and a shortlist of heavy hitters to consider, but after rigorous discussions and engagement with each of the potential owners, we are certain that our final eight owners have the perfect combination of strategic insight and passion needed to make the first T20 Global League a complete success,” said CSA President, Chris Nenzani.

The official eight team owners, host cities and marquee players are:

Joining the owners will be the eight Protea Marquee Players who have now been assigned to a team on the basis of the city they have historically been associated with or a city they will be able to build a strong association with. Alongside the Protea marquee players, the eight International marquee players that were previously announced will help drive the global spirit of competition as the franchises battle for top spot.

“The announcement of the team owners is a key milestone to successfully launch our T20 Global League,” commented CSA Chief Executive, Haroon Lorgat. “We are thrilled by the international mix of owners and the passion and excitement that was clearly demonstrated during the bidding process by them and the marquee players. It sets up our #T20GL as a fans favourite in the cricketing calendar.”

The player draft is scheduled for 19 August, with almost 400 players from 10 countries confirming their interest.

Unfortunately not - but I bring my own anyway.

I'm not 100% certain but IIRC the band wasn't on station during the IPL so maybe they'll be asked by the stadium "owner" to piss off during the tournament.
 
No transformation 'targets' for T20 Global League

CSA CEO Haroon Lorgat offered this explanation in London on Monday:

"The team owners are excited by our RPCs and hubs and they want to take some of that back to their own countries. That sort of cross-pollination can only be good for the development of the game.

"In terms of transformation, the league won’t be target specific, but the whole philosophy of transformation is in the prospectus and we have asked all the team owners to be very mindful of that. In the seventh year, there will be a review based on key performance indicators and we reserve the right to cancel the agreement with an owner if they don’t meet those, and transformation is part of that.

"The challenges of transformation are similar to some of the challenges in their own countries in terms of developing and growing the game, so we can also learn from them and they will learn from us too.

"Every franchise is obliged to adopt and fund a hub in their area. Therefore at least eight hubs, in every area of the country, will be looked after."

The simple truth is that, for a number of the new owners, developing cricket in South Africa is not the priority. Instead, the priority is to grow their brand.

CSA, for now, seems okay with that. While the organisation has taken a 'get it done' approach to transformation in recent years with the strict implementation of targets, they have relaxed their position this time.

CSA seeks new T20 league owners in Stellenbosch

Cape Town - Cricket South Africa (CSA) is urgently looking for a new owner for their Stellenbosch franchise in the upcoming T20 Global League.

This comes after the news on Friday that Brimstone, the investment company initially announced at the glitzy London launch as owners of the franchise - one of eight earmarked for the competition - had “quietly pulled out” of the deal.

CSA confirmed that they were "currently evaluating other interested parties from the initial shortlist of bidders as well as new parties who have expressed interest".

In the interim, CSA will take on the responsibility to set up the franchise.

"We are confident that the Stellenbosch franchise team will be ready for participation in the T20 Global League, which kicks off in November 2017," CSA CEO Haroon Lorgat said in a statement.

A few team names and coaches been announced this week. Benoni zalmi and joburg giants. Bloem Blazers have Robin Singh as head coach with donald and robbie p as assistants. Stellenbosch Monarchs have Stephen Fleming and Eric Simons.

Squad sizes have been increased to 18 and 5 foreign players.
 
I'm dreading how bad the PE team name will be…

At first I was like what the hell is a zalmi...

Pakistani business executive and entrepreneur Javed Afridi (CEO of Haier Pakistan and also the owner of cricket franchise Peshawar Zalmi in the Pakistan Super League) was announced as the owner of the franchise which will now call Sahara Park Willowmoore home.

“Zalmi”, directly translated, means “Youth” in the language of Urdu (the national language of Pakistan)

T20 Global League franchise Benoni Zalmi has appointed former South Africa captain Graeme Smith as its head coach. Zalmi team owner Javed Afridi made the announcement on Monday.

Smith, 36, last played a competitive game in May 2014, a T20 for Somerset two months after his final Test against Australia. It will be Smith's first stint as a coach in recognised cricket. Highveld Lions' Geoffrey Toyana, who was recently among the frontrunners to replace Russell Domingo as South Africa's coach, will be his assistant. Their first assignment together comes this weekend, when they will have to pick from a pool of over 400 players in the player draft.

Elsewhere, Durban Qalandars has put Paddy Upton in charge, with Aaqib Javed to oversee the bowlers. Also, Stellenbosch Monarchs has appointed Stephen Fleming head coach, with Eric Simons named his assistant.

Stellenbosch had suffered a setback last week when Brimstone Investment Corporation Limited, the investment company which had been unveiled as its owner by Cricket South Africa, said it will not proceed with the acquisition.

Very interesting that Smith is head coach and toyana only assistant.

So everyone except the Pretoria and PE sides have names and coaches.
 
T20 teams value name recognition more then coaching qualification or experience. How many of the young players has Graeme Smith seen play. Geoffrey Toyana local knowledge will help him a lot.
 
International marque announcement Saturday evening, normal player draft sunday. Kolpak players part of the international group. 18 players total in squad, 5 international players. For now Stellenbosch franchise is CSA owned.

Cape Town - The launch of T20 Global League has not been plain sailing for Cricket South Africa (CSA).

When plans were unveiled earlier in the year for an eight-team mega-tournament to come to South Africa, the idea was met with scepticism, based largely on the fact that there appeared limited time.

Franchise owners needed to be secured, government needed to buy in, players needed to be secured and it all needed to happen in a few months.

It seemed a big ask but now, with just three months to go, the tournament is set to take a major step towards being a functioning product when the player draft takes place in Cape Town this weekend.

There was a stumbling block when Brimstone Investment boss Mustaq Brey, who was due to take ownership of the Stellenbosch franchise, pulled out of the tournament earlier this month.

That bombshell has forced CSA to take ownership of the franchise for the time-being, but if they get through the weekend with all eight franchises having secured their squads of 18, then that will go a long way towards restoring confidence in the tournament.

Each franchise has already been allocated a marquee Proteas signing, and at a function on Saturday night the eight marquee international players will also be allocated a franchise.

That will leave space for 16 other players, and they will all be determined at Sunday's draft.

With each franchise operating within the same financial boundaries - they all have the same money to spend - there will be an opportunity for each side to have the first choice as 16 rounds of bidding take place.

CSA last week confirmed last week that five overseas-based players can be included in a squad of 18, and Kolpak players will be considered international players.

That ensures that the likes of Kyle Abbott and Rilee Rossouw, if picked, would not keep a South African-based player out of that squad.

Sport24 understands that a pool of around 90 international players will be available for recruitment while around 200 domestic players will be considered.

With the marquee players already identified, Sunday will only see a further 32 international players and 96 local players given an opportunity to play in the tournament.
