SATA HDD - WHERE HOW WHAT AND WHY

Hi,

I'm in the process of gradually upgrading my pc, and the next important thing on the list is HDD space.

I've got a motherboard (M2N-SLI Deluxe) that supports SATA (I or II im not sure), and I'm willing to spend R1200 on a new harddrive. I've looked around but the one thing that I'm not really good with is harddrives, especially SATA, its new to me.

Does anyone know where I can get good value for money, 500GB with at least a 32mb cache(or better if there is).
I live in Somerset West/Cape Town area so near there if possible.

Just bought a 500Gb WD Caviar (16Mb cache) from cyberdyne for R790.

Things you should know:

- SATA II is backward compatable so even if your motherboard is SATA I, a SATA II drive will work.
- SATA II (300 Gb/s) and SATA I (150Gb/s) are both just thoeretical limits. Any standard drive won't go past about 120 Gb/s at the moment.
- New drives don't have a Molex power plug, you'll need a SATA power convertor.

They are the worst company ever.
All my stuff just never worked properly, and they wouldnt have anything to do with it.

Hate them so much, and they ripped me off so bad.

And if u got a small psu like me, SATA chows less power than IDE :D

Don't mean to knit-pick, but, I think those are insanely fast numbers... perhaps Mb/s ??:rolleyes:

Seagate - if you touch anything other than Seagate, I'll pull you over my lap and spank you! :D
 
Cache size makes very little difference. After reading some articles, I tested it with 2 160GB hard drives: one 8MB cache and one 16MB cache. Negligible difference (if any).

So if I could get a lower-cache version of the same hard drive capacity for a cheaper price, I'd do it.

There's no way I'd buy a Samsung drive! Seems like we're from the same area. Computer Zone at the mall - R899 incl - Seagate 500GB SATAII (32MB cache)...if you want to deal with a face. I'm taking one from them this coming weekend.
 
IC also have a 500GB Seagate for R799, don't know about the cache size though.
 
I can get the Seagate 500GB SATA with 32MB cache in Cape Town for R750.
