Satellite myths busted

If there are any myths and misconceptions about satellites, then top of the list would be “satellites are a dying breed” and “satellites are expensive.”

No amount of magic features can hide the not-so-so-called latency of normal satellite type internet services. It all depends on what the connection will be used for. Anything realtime eg. Voip/Gaming will be affected no matter what. The only thing they can improve on is the effect of things like jitter on a voip conversation.

For normal browsing some people might not even feel this latency effect, but it will always be there.

This enables end customers to experience broadband internet browsing speeds, which are very similar to or better than that of most terrestrial access networks, such as digital subscriber line.

Better? Only when one is in the middle of freaking nowhere probably. The thing is your terrestrial access networks also use the same magic that is available to the vsat providers to improve overall browsing experience for the end user.

Expensive compared to what? I suspect the only reason is Telkom's overpriced ADSL makes satellite figures look better.

+1 Sounds like wishful thinking on the author's part.

We had 4 sites running via vsat backbone - and the ping latency screwed things up horribly.

When we switched over to 3G, everything improved quite beautifully. And 3G was cheaper than vsat.

Anyways,

Give me an uncapped satellite link > 512Kbps for < R1000. Not happening. What does this prove? Satellite is expensive.
Give me a satellite link with latency < 500ms. Not happening. What does this prove? Communication via satellites (earth-orbiting) = high latency.
Choose satellite vs fibre when you can have all the benefits of fibre? Are you going to choose satellite? Not happening. What does this prove? Satellite is a dying breed (of internet communications, that is. GPS etc is another story)

Just another impossible dream by "hams" but they are entitled hold their view over a dying hobby/service.
 
Cheap compared to a leased line, sure, but that is about it.

what bull**** about latency, there is nothing you can do about it besides minimise and EXTRA latency with your equipment etc. VOIP and video are still going to get affected no matter what "magic" you try to make people believe.
