Saved myself R150 joining MyBroadband

Fedup with my 1MB line that can barely stream a Youtube video, I decided I want to switch service providers. And what better place to ask than on the newly joined message boards.

Prepping myself and getting my facts in order i found that my 1MB uncapped @ R488p/m from MWeb can be upgraded, and at a less price.

They had their excuses for not upgrading me immediately or automatically, but i'm just happy i was able to change it effective today.

So now I am paying R339 for twice the speed - simply by investigating


At the moment i'm so happy i forgot i actually wanted to change SP. Sooo... what other SP can be recommended at a good price, and RELIABLE? It needs to include the line.

MWEB doesn't have any excuse to save their customers money. The only reason why they didn't upgrade you was so they could knowingly overcharge you for a service they know you could have gotten cheaper with the upgrade.

Shows you their mentality when it comes to customer service. They're only interested in profit and not providing a service clients wants/will recommend to others. Imagine how many other people are still stuck on 1mbps overpaying by R150+ and they're not even clued up in the price decreases?

Probably 90% of their clients and know lots of people who are just as clueless about it too so had to help them change it.

I looked at WebAfrica & i see that for the 2Mb line it is R10 (acceptable) more expensive. But if i would think of upgrading, the 4MB is R100 more expensive than MWeb.

So what would be reason for switching then?

Note: i am not at all unhappy with MWeb or their support, in fact, besides the non-upgrade thing i have no other issues with the company. it's just that not being able to watch youtube on a 1MB line after my 384KB line did just fine is what causes me concern. But thing is this could be Telkom's fault too i'm sure.

The account side is not Telkom's fault or the line if it is run by Mweb.

I've got the incredible connection 2mb uncapped for R99 a month. Line rental not included. So long as you keep your heavy downloads for after midnight, you can get decent speeds during the day. Not for everyone, but I'm a very happy camper

Not sure where you are getting your pricing from. Web Africa's 4mbps uncapped is R299 vs R239 of MWEB (R50 difference)

The MWEB account in question is their "standard" product with a much lower threshold when it comes to what you can download and heavier shaped than their "premium" account which still sits at R369 for 4mbps (R70 more expensive than Web Africa).

If you compare only their pricing and only on their standard account, sure, they're less expensive, but if you compare the price vs quality (including the threshold/shaping/throttling bs) then Web Africa comes out tops

fwiw, its not telkom but mweb. Youtube streams perfectly on my 2mbps @ 480p

I'm looking at prices incl line rental.
And I'm sure I would have had the std mweb product, and its worked fine for downloads so far. Maybe that's the issue with general browsing speed though.

If you'd of investigated early December '13, you could've been on a 2Mbps line then, already. That's exactly what I did by phoning up Telkom & within a few minutes had my ADSL speed upgraded, long before they were officially due to start in about mid-Jan '14.

You could save yourself a whole lot more if you don't need upcapped 24/7.

I don't understand why the ISP you want needs to 'include the line' ?
It's arguably FAR better to have control of your line & deal with Telkom directly if & when things go wrong, than relying on an ISP to sort them out for you - Telkom blames the ISP and vice versa, is what I've heard & read.

My advice is to move your ADSL line to Telkom & choose your ISP, whether for capped or uncapped.
