New Saw Movie Begins Shooting, Cast & Character Details Revealed
The Saw Reboot has officially kicked off production! We first learned back in May that comedian Chris Rock, rather surprisingly, had partnered with Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures to revamp the long-running horror franchise. Now we have word that filming is underway, with Samuel L. Jackson confirmed to be amongst the new cast members. Not only that, but it's also been confirmed that this sequel will be part of the ongoing canon.
Plot details are still largely being kept under wraps, but Chris Rock will play a cop investigating a series of violent crimes. Samuel L. Jackson is on board as his father. Max Minghella (The Handmaid's Tale) will play Rock's Partner, William Schenk. Lastly, Marisol Nichols (Riverdale) will play police captain Angie Garza, who serves as Rocks' boss. Joe Drake, chairman of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, had this to say in a statement.
This is all a lot to process. It's crazy enough that a new Saw movie is coming as the result of Chris Rock's self-proclaimed love for the franchise, which started in 2004 with James Wan's initial, twisted entry. Yet, now we have Samuel L. Jackson, one of the biggest movie stars on the planet, also on board and they're somehow going to tie this all into the crazy continuity that already exists? With that in mind, it's probably for the best that Darren Lynn Bousman, who helmed Saw II, III and IV, is returning to the director's chair for this one.
Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg penned the screenplay for the new installment, which still doesn't have an official title. Mark Burg and Oren Koules, who are veterans of the series, are on board as producers. Franchise creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell are also on board as executive producers, alongside longtime executive producer Daniel Heffner. Chris Rock is also set to produce, in addition to his on-screen duties.
To date, the eight entries in the Saw franchise have grossed a combined $976 million worldwide. Given their low budgets, they've been highly profitable ventures for Lionsgate. Generally speaking, the movies follow John Kramer (Tobin Bell), aka the Jigsaw Killer, who designs elaborate and deadly traps in order to teach his potential victims a lesson about life. The most recent entry, Jigsaw, was released in 2017. It's unclear if Bell will be reprising his role in the upcoming movie. Rock will headline as a detective, with Minghella (“The Handmaid’s Tale”) co-starring as his partner, William Schenk, according to the Hollywood Reporter. “Riverdale” actress Nichols will feature as Captain Angie Garza — aka Rock’s boss.
Rock’s entry will be the ninth flick in the “Saw” franchise, which has been a box office hit for Lionsgate. The gore series follows the traps set by Jigsaw, a sadistic serial killer who forces victims to play deadly games of survival.
There will be plenty of “Saw” alums back for this revamp, including director Darren Lynn Bousman, who helmed three previous films in the franchise. Rock will executive produce with James Wan, who directed the 2004 original, and Leigh Whannell, who starred and penned that film’s script.
This will be a rare violent film for Rock, who’s best known for his comedy work, excluding his breakout role as Pookie in the gritty cult classic “New Jack City.”

Saw (franchise)
Saw is an American horror franchise created by James Wan and Leigh Whannell. It consists of nine feature films and additional media.
The franchise primarily revolves around John Kramer, also called the "Jigsaw Killer" or simply "Jigsaw". He was introduced briefly in Saw and developed in more detail in Saw II and the subsequent films. Rather than killing his victims outright, Kramer traps them in situations that he calls "tests" or "games" to test their will to live through physical or psychological torture and believes that if they survive, they will be "rehabilitated". Despite the fact that Kramer was murdered in Saw III, the films continue to focus on the posthumous influence of the Jigsaw Killer and his apprentices by exploring his character via flashbacks.

In 2003, Wan and Whannell made a short film to help pitch a potential feature film concept. Their pitch was ultimately successful, and, in 2004, the first installment debuted at the Sundance Film Festival. The film was released theatrically that October, by Lionsgate. The first sequel was immediately green-lit after the film's immensely successful opening weekend. Five directors have worked on the series: Wan, Darren Lynn Bousman, David Hackl, Kevin Greutert and The Spierig Brothers, while Whannell, Bousman, Patrick Melton, Marcus Dunstan, Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger penned the scripts for separate films in the series. Each film was released subsequently every October, on the Friday before Halloween, between 2004 and 2010. Both of the creators remained with the franchise as executive producers.
On July 22, 2010, franchise producer Mark Burg confirmed that the seventh film, Saw 3D, is the final installment of the series.[1] In 2012, Lionsgate reportedly expressed interest in continuing the franchise with a reboot.[2] In November 2013, it was reported that they were actively developing a sequel.[3] An eighth film, Jigsaw, was eventually released in October 2017. In 2019, a ninth film was announced, Spiral, with comedian and actor Chris Rock attached to star, produce, and co-write.[4]
The franchise grossed more than $1 billion from box office and retail sales by 2009,[5] and the films have collectively grossed over $976 million at the worldwide box office as of 2018. The film series as a whole has received mostly mixed to negative reviews by critics, but has been a financial success at the box office and is one of the highest-grossing horror film franchises of all time. While the films have been classified as torture porn by some critics,[6][7][8] the creators of Saw disagree with that term.[9]
