My second oldest got locked out of their Gmail account when upgrading to newer phone. We had to do a SIM swap as well. Regardless of us having access to the phone number, the password for whatever reason Google cannot authenticate the account. So the hell with Gmail. Thankfully the steam account was basically empty. So only a R1.2k Loss. But I will never trust Gmail again for important stuff.

I am thinking to test out Proton or Zoho but I have never used the services. Any thoughts on them and if they are any good? Otherwise I am thinking outlook maybe.

Sounds like you should've used a password manager like Bitwarden / Proton Pass etc. I switched to iCloud mail and it works good. Outlook is okay if you can handle loads of spam and ads. Proton is expensive at 500gb for $10. For just a bit more Google gives you 2tb.

Register your won domain - costs less than R100 a year for renewal and email-only hosting can be had for a few R per month also.
Looking into this again, What do I need for my own email server locally. I saw people just setting up an old laptop?

Your own SMTP locally?
No...don't do it. Unless you know what you are doing and can get a static IP. Even then managing your own mail server and trying to stop the spam is a full time job. There are better/cheaper/more secure solutions than you doing it.

So you all recommend Proton for a start see how that goes? It will only be used for the new steam account. It is sad that my second oldest lost their Steam but it is also why I will never trust Gmail again.

Just take a step back and see what you did wrong. You need to teach your child to take responsibility for their actions and not always blame someone else.

Make sure every Gmail has a backup email linked to it.

Make sure you also store the codes if using 2FA.

Also put in a 3rd backup method.

Why blame Google for poor parenting?

Good luck with having your emails actually deliver if you go this route. Best to rather get a domain and then email hosting locally for a few bobs a month. Can be had for R55 if not lower. Make sure to use different providers for the domain vs the email hosting though.

Re: Gmail
I have heard many horror stories before but the juniors in our (extended) family have lost more google accounts I could care to remember. Most of them are due to a wrong password (because it was set 3 years ago, with the last reset, and they forgot it), and not having ANY of the backup methods set.

There is reason why you are called "dad" and one of those is that it is far less painful for you if you keep record of everyone in the households passwords including moms and grandma's. Just makes life so much easier...

I am our family's tech CEO (and a couple of elderly folk in my community)

I have everyone's passwords and backup methods and get an email whenever there is a change. They are a reckless bunch.
