Saying Goodbye to Gmail.

If the host gets pissy they can try to hold your domain hostage.
Maybe we shouldn't play by the rules anymore?

Domain registration is a big step but it doesn't solve the Static IP problem, opening ports and all that stuff. But come to think of it why have a domain name? So that the services I host gets listed and services will allow the traffic right? What would happen if I just have an unlisted email client? I mean I only need it for authentication and if only one service like steam has the email account who would know that it exist and how is it any different then Google just giving me the middle finger?

There is reason why you are called "dad" and one of those is that it is far less painful for you if you keep record of everyone in the households passwords including moms and grandma's. Just makes life so much easier...
Our family domain's email is hosted by google so I can do password resets etc via the admin panel. That also makes life pretty easy.

Could you explain this please?

You want your domain's nameservers to be accessible independently to where the website/emails are hosted. If you have it all at the same provider, you lose access to the ability to point your domain somewhere else at a moment's notice should your only host go down. In the same sense you want your domain contact email to not be on the same domain, eg. the email connected to domain.co.za should not be [email protected].

If the domain host goes down, its fine as those entries are cached all over the world. If the website/email server dies (looking at you Absolute), I have the option to quickly change the A/MX records with the independent domain host, effectively pointing my traffic elsewhere with minor downtime. On the email/MX side things become a bit complicated to now manage incoming email on an unconfigured server, but on the website/A side its dead easy, as I just need to restore a backup of the website.

Register your won domain - costs less than R100 a year for renewal and email-only hosting can be had for a few R per month also.
hi
please advise on a service provider for this

**** it, steam email everything can burn, I will create a proton account get a new steam up and running and use that until something does something again. I don't care they can keep their email and self hosting. If they want us as clients they will make things better if they don't they will do the **** they do now. If path forward isn't clear then no point doing it.

Pissing away R1.2k then.

The steam account is lost, I can do ****all about that, it is not as easy as giving them a call. We reached out to them followed the prompts and got ****ed in the process.

Proton mail all the way. You can also link your own domain to proton mail if required later on.

I do think it is fear mongering, how will they know who to spam? I mean if you only use it for 1 single account? Doesn't make sense. I think companies make a lot of money out of email and they don't want us to get rid of them.

You missed the point. Rolling your own email, DIY style as described in this reddit post is not about spam IN, but spam OUT. (Or to put it differently, someone used your IP to send spam out 3 years ago, so your IP where you will be hosting this on is probably already on some blacklist or marked as a residential IP). You will have trouble getting outgoing email to land in my inbox if its on one of those lists.

Regardless of us having access to the phone number, the password for whatever reason Google cannot authenticate the account.
Don't you have 2FA or backup codes you can use to access your account and reset password?

We had password, and 2FA authentication to pin in the OTP. But I think because we did a SIM swap with the number Google no longer accepts the OTP. We tried we failed.

Why you should also use backup codes:

So you all recommend Proton for a start see how that goes? It will only be used for the new steam account. It is sad that my second oldest lost their Steam but it is also why I will never trust Gmail again.
You think Proton is going to be more forgiving if you lose your access credentials?

Sim swap or port? Sim swap only really shared with the banks afaik, and those security measures are only there for a limited time. Port could screw things up with OTPs not landing. But you are saying the OTP is not being accepted. That is abnormal.
