Scammers, free loaders and multifunctional worms were the name of the Malware game in January 2011 according to Kaspersky Lab

Having had a few the other night I went to download an updated VLC and google search vlc media player download at the time www.vlcmediaplayer.org/ was top search item..downloaded and then all av and firewall kicked in as it was a malicious spoof site.

So...dont download when loaded
