Scary, terrifying, this shook me up! This article describes what happened during a robbery in Lenasia, south of Johannesburg. Scary!

(Sensitive readers, possibly, could be shaken)

A LOCAL businessman and his wife fell victim to a brutal robbery on October 28.

The couple, who stay in Lenasia South, Ext 4 and have a small business in Lenasia, were tortured by four criminals who entered their home at about 11pm.

The four, who were wearing balaclavas, demanded that the couple hand over R2 million in cash. “They started slitting mattresses and bags to try and find money, but there wasn’t anything,” said the wife. The couple apparently pleaded with the four to take household items like the DVD player, but the criminals wanted money.

The husband, who was in the toilet at the time, was beaten up by the suspects, who stabbed him in his thigh, tried cutting his fingers with a scissor, and burnt his stomach with an iron.

The couple, and their young granddaughter, were then tied up and had their faces covered with tape.

As they continued beating her husband, the wife managed to free her hands, and secretly put the iron on low. The suspects thereafter held the iron to her chest, burning her. She was also stabbed with a screw driver to her knees. As they were doing this, they used the words “punishment” and “torture”.

They also took the wife to the bathroom, where they tried burning her with hot water. Fortunately, the hot and cold water signs were swapped, and only cold water poured from the tap.

The brutal attackers further held out a gun magazine to the lady, and told her that one bullet would be for her, another for her husband, and the third for her little granddaughter.

The attackers stayed in their home for about two hours, and not finding the money they thought they would get, left.

At this stage, the husband, who was also taped around the face, could not breathe. A family member explained that he thought he was going to die, and being a Muslim, had already read his final prayers (kalimah). Shortly afterwards, the criminals decided to leave, and his wife cut the tape off his face, saving his life.

The family pressed their ADT button, and the security company responded. Neighbours had to break the door, as the couple and their grandchild were left locked in their own home.

Some items, such as a sewing machine and DVD player, were stolen from the house.

By Saturday morning, the pools of blood had congealed on the passage floor and walls – a telling reminder of the previous night’s savage attack.

The couple is currently in hospital, while their grandchild is with family members.

According to Lenasia South police spokesperson, Captain Manoe Kele, no arrests have been made as yet, but it has been alleged that the criminals are foreigners.

Terrible story :( But these criminals are stupid on a whole new level. R2 million in the house?

Glad it didn't happen but don't they know the difference between hot and cold water?

For the sake of these people, I'm glad they didn't know the difference!

Absolutly disgusting.....

I actually have no words for this tbh :(

We need the death penalty in South Africa... the government has proven useless in stopping this sort of thing.

You know this is the only terrible thing about our country (forgetting the politics for a second).

Its not enough that they rob you - they torture, maim, rape and kill you. Why are criminals so violent here? Why cant they just take what they want and go? What kind of despicable human being thinks its okay to do this kind of stuff?

These criminals need to be hanged. I hope the police shoot them for "resisting arrest"

Unfortunately in places like Lenasia people usually do keep crazy amounts like R2m in the house.

I think ina situation like this i would try knock myself out.

I'm from Lenasia, don't know of a single person who has any large amount of moola in their house. Sure, there are a lot of business-people who live in Lenasia, but they all bank daily (at least, those that I know of).

Perhaps I just don't know these people...

I'm armed 24/7. (used it twice already in the house)

We sleep with every door locked. Even if I go out to the shop round the corner, doors are locked.

This is the new SA.

oh i've heard of quite a few, in Laudium too. Got to do with a little thing called tax evasion. Criminals may be dumb but they're usually smart enough to know who to target and what to look for.

Tax evasion is outta my league... When we earn what I do, paying tax is easy, and a little...

/lame joke
I can't even afford to pay attention!

Sad thing is:

This happens daily on farms around the country, not to put a damper on what has happened in this case.

We're living in a world where people get attuned to reading this kind of news. The problem is we're getting to a point were we're just glad it wasn't us and move on. We need to stand together and take our country back. Seriously enough is enough.

I'm with you. I'm asking this question with the greatest amount of honesty and no dis-respect intended: What can we realistically do?

We should form up a unit (organization) Which is community driven. PAGGAD had the right idea but lost the plot somewhere. We should start policing our Suburbs and remove all unwanted and uninvited guests and keep them out. Sector Policing is a huge success if driven correctly, but once an area becomes quiet the interest dies out. And opens up the door for attacks again. We need a commando type of private institution to DO something about this as government won't.
