School and parent stories

This reminds me of parents at my kids primary school complaining about the amount of homework the kids get and they can't get to everything.
The school literally gave kids time in every class to do their homework. My kids never had any homework, they did it all at school.
So the parents complaining was just telling everyone that their kids are dumbasses that could not finish homework at school already.
 
I had an issue where my kids book was not marked/checked for the entire year so far. I made sure to take pics of every single page from 1st term until end of 3rd term. Raised issue with HOD who told me he will investigate. HOD calls me later in the day to say that the book has been marked/checked and I (parent) didn't notice. Turns out the teacher quickly marked the book that morning when I raised the issue and pleaded innocent. Imagine their surprise when I pulled out the pics...:laugh:

Can't even get honest teachers nowadays...:(
 
My eldest is in Grade 4 now.

The last week of the terms is a wind-down week, but they mainly do some or other craft project, or an activity related to one of their subjects. They might have 1 or 2 days of messing around and maybe some "TV", but they don't sit in the class watching movies all day.

With regards to concerts, can't really comment as they only do one every 2nd year I think - and last year it was a few sessions after school and they were at home before 19:00

Depends on the age and child. My 10 year old is on top of it, and it helps that he is super organized and diligent. Homework and summaries always done.

My 7 year old ADHD middle son, phew, he needs all our attention and assistance, very hard to get him to do homework at school, it's a hit and miss with him.

Same boat, hence the move of the eldest to private because the public special need was not really helping any more since hitting the "intermediate phase".

Well not anymore. That rich fck is buying everyone out and its going to become a non-profit.
I'm interested to see how that goes.

Hopefully they strike the balance between business and public service.

I remember as a class we used to mark homework in the mornings , I wouldnt expect the teacher to mark each and everyone, spot checks should be good but often, not even this was done an I was like: so how do we know he's doing it right? or that we as parents are even doing it right with him?

The whole point of homework is re-enforcement and checking of what has been learnt and meant as a early warning of a failure to understand material.

We live in a parallel universe to some people.

its definitely post covid thing. I felt so bad because in that last week before they closed the schools, hardly anyone sent their kids in and on the last day, my daughter was the only one in her class.
I bet those parents had mega regrets after having the kids at home for 3 months.

I understand of course as teachers have their lives but it would be nice if there would be some support for competitive students - wouldn't mind paying really. They do publish photos/results in monthly newsletter if kids excel in IBT so I suppose that is something.

I'm not referring to extra credit. Like lets say your child is struggling with a concept or something like long division. So you ask the teacher for assitance or guidance so you can give a few more exercises or material. The one answer I got back, because it was a public special needs school, is that it was unfair to other pupils , who's parent WEREN'T able to help their children like we wanted to and they would be disadvantaged.

I use the phrase lowest common denominator for that educators belief as rather than try uplift the children, they would rather drop the effort to match the lowest ones. Made my blood boil.
 
Last week grade 7 son had an Afrikaans movie in Afrikaans, he's like now I know what jackass and arsehole are in Afrikaans cause the movie had them in the subtitles. The teacher was like ah crap forgot about that in there.

I have huge respect for people who decide to home school, if they do it properly.

Even my son being at school for 6 hours a day, his homework and extra murals is difficult to juggle so I can't imagine doing homeschooling on top of that.
