First mistake parents make. You may think your kids are special, nobody else thinks that.
Second mistake. Teachers are not the most intelligent species out there. They not going to make your child smart, you must. Actually you had to do that before your kid was 7 years old.
Primary school is Mickey mouse. If you sit and do all your kids work with them, especially from grade 4, then that kid is going to struggle in high school. In high school the amount of work, sport and other activities increases tenfold and if your kid can't manage it by himself he/she will be left behind.

Last week grade 7 son had an Afrikaans movie in Afrikaans, he's like now I know what jackass and arsehole are in Afrikaans cause the movie had them in the subtitles. The teacher was like ah crap forgot about that in there.

I think the reason I managed in afrikaans was because of all the shows as well:

Willie Wallie, Liewe Heksie, Heidi, Brakenjan etc etc.

We watched "Gods must be Crazy" when learning about the San

I think he means that kids need to learn "how to study". Many parents fall into the trap of "helping" their kids with homework and the little manipulators know it too but it does them all a disservice.

Varsity is different though, I mean you can even choose to go to lectures or not. Plus sometimes you could even do supplementary exams if you flunked. But it also does depend on what you're studying.

Sadly true. I understand about heritage but I think the forced language does not serve a purpose, especially in tertiary.

Yoh - that is lot of money just for one subject. I plan to upskill myself in Afrikaans to be just ahead of him as I can't afford it. As it is, we will have to cut one of his extramurals one of these days. Toss is between Chess & swimming.

Dude, have you seen potholes here ?

Nah - swimming is not "needed" but I would prefer he is proficient in all 4 strokes and can swim non stop 100m with at least breast stroke & free style.

I have, but that's where chess would be more advantageous, how to dodge them and the taxi coming at you. Doing the calculations and the planning.
