Scirocco R with performance mods - Yay or Nay?

Depends on what the engine light is for. Probably just because of the decat, you can just fit a mini cat to switch it off, R350+/-. What software was loaded?

Not always, sometimes a mini cat is still needed. It's probably Revo or CPI though. Get the code read, and let us know what it is. If it's not because of the cat, then I bet you it's that R8 Coilpack.

Revo stage 2 files definitely include cat delete, as do Unitronic (I know, I had them both). Never had an engine light except for the one Unitronic map that had a bug in it, that was rectified.
 
Yep, I know they do. Might even be the DSG. I know you have to remap for the DSG as well if the torque gets too high.

Probably not a CEL for that - you'd get the flashing gearbox display of death in the MFD
 
Hmm, so hard to say without knowing what the code is. Where is the MAF sensor on these things? Might be that coz of the CAI.
 
It would be hard for me to get that info from them, it was already a mission just to get them to tell me what mods had been done.

I also wanted them to send the car to an independent mechanic, to have a look on everything, but they said that it would be too much of a risk for them.
 
They specifically told me that it was because the car was putting out more power than it should. They also said that they could turn it off, but that it would come on again after 100km.

My car (with the same engine) was doing 310hp/500Nm without a CEL.
 
Walk away, not worth it.

If you make any unauthorised performance modifications the warrantee is void. Been there, done that ;)

If the CEL comes on, it means that the bloke who did the mods doesn't know what he's doing.

Just walk away.
 
you could just get a diagnostic by plugging a machine into the car

I suspect because of the upgrades the air fuel mixture is running slightly lean and perhaps a simple tune would fix it.
 
Stay away, none of those mods will have caused this, a remap does void the warranty as it increases the boost pressure. Also a cheap remap could have been done to save money by someone that doesnt know what they were doing and can cause problems in the future. Also its missing parts needed/suggested for stage 2 remap so it makes me think it was done on the cheap

stage 2 needs intake and downpipe.

When I went to test drive the car the salesman told me that the car has the following modifications to it:

  • Down pipes that are decatted
  • Cold air induction
  • Stage 2 software
  • R8 Coil pack

When I drove the car, the engine light came on. They told me that it was the engine modifications that caused it to come on. The car was insanely fast... My previous car was a Navara 2.5d, so it's like a whole new world to me.

The service book was also missing, so I took down the VIN number and went over to the VW dealership where it was serviced. They told me it was in for an oil change just 2 months earlier, and everything looked fine, the guy actually said that the car had "hardly been ridden". The car is according to them still covered under warranty, but when I asked the guy about whether the modifications void the warranty he said that any modification usually voids it but sometimes people get away with it. I have heard mixed stories about this.

The sales agent told me the mechanic next door, who had apparently done the mods, was willing to put the stock parts back in if he could keep the current parts.

The last weird thing was that although the car was advertised as a 2013 model, the VW technician assured me that it was a 2012 model that had only been registered in 2013. Kinda sneaky...

I am not really a street racer, and I feel like the standard car has more than enough power for me, but if these parts are valuable then i don't want to just give them away for free. Stock parts are not included if I buy the car as it is.

So what do you guys think?

If the upgrades were done professionally the engine light won't come on. Don't walk away... RUN AWAY!
 
Nope nope nope.

Stock Scrirocco R already feels/sounds modified as it is.

If engine lights are coming on then it was modified badly anyway...walk away.

As for the 2012 > 2013 thing it's hardly sneaky it's just common practise really. Unless there was a new MY2013 then the 2013 and 2012 are exactly the same anyway.

Registration date is exactly that so it's a 2013 car. If they claim it's a MY2013 (because there was actually a change) and it's a MY2012 that's something else.

I had exactly the opposite with both my bikes. MY2007 registered in 2006 and MY2014 registered in 2013 and it's not that hard to explain to people if they actually understand what it means.
