Luiz Felipe Scolari has been sacked as manager of Chelsea.
A statement on the club's website revealed the move had been made "to maintain a challenge for the trophies we are still competing for".
Scolari, who led Brazil to the 2002 World Cup, was appointed in June 2008 as the replacement for Avram Grant.
Chelsea, fourth in the Premier League and seven points behind Manchester United, will be led by assistant Ray Wilkins on an interim basis.

"Luiz Felipe Scolari has been dismissed as manager of Chelsea Football Club with immediate effect," read the statement. "The Chelsea board would like to place on record our gratitude for his time as manager.
"Felipe has brought many positives to the club since he joined and we all feel a sense of sadness that our relationship has ended so soon.
"Unfortunately the results and performances of the team appeared to be deteriorating at a key time in the season.
"In order to maintain a challenge for the trophies we are still competing for we felt the only option was to make the change now.
"The search for a new manager has already started and we hope to have someone in place as soon as possible."
A banner unfurled during Chelsea's 0-0 draw with Hull at Stamford Bridge on Saturday called for the installation of West Ham boss and former Blues favourite Gianfranco Zola as manager.
But West Ham vice chairman Ausgier Fridgeirsson told BBC Sport the club has had no contact from Chelsea regarding Zola, who replaced Alan Curbishley at Upton Park in September, or former Chelsea coach Steve Clarke, Zola's current assistant.
What ever happened to giving the manager TIME? First Grant now Scolari. Wonder who will be stupid enough to take the job now.

possible list of coaches:
1. Frank Rijkaard
2. Avram Grant
3. Roberto Mancini
i personally think Frank
Congratulations Chelsea, you have become the new Inter Milan. Continuity is obviously a word that is not found in your dictionary. Look at Chelsea today and you can remember Mou's last season when Roman (the unwise) did not want to buy any defenders during the January transfer period even though they clearly needed them. That was the beginning of the end. Good coaches don't come every day and Gus will not be a panacea, no matter how much Roman hopes it so.
Good luck Blues, you sure are going to be singing them.![]()
I think Frank is the best coach out there at the moment.
He will make Chelsea play fast attacking/stylish football. Something lacking even in MOANOrinho's boring gameplan.
No reason why attractive football cannot win matches. Look at Barcelona
Inter are playing the typical football that MOANorinho introduced at Chelsea. Reason why they could never lift the CL maybe.
Arsenal will never win anything if they do not buy some experience to support all the youngsters.
Inter are playing dull boring football at the moment. I hope they knock United out but when i watch them play they sure dont look like a team that is sitting on top of the Serie A.
